Course Description

Theory and skill development for practitioners who are or will be supervising interns and/or professionals in school, agency, and other settings. Topics include ethical issues in clinical supervision, models and best practices, documentation, and troubleshooting problematic dynamics.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Identify the definition and purpose of counseling supervision;
  • Recognize the ethical/legal issues involved in counseling supervision;
  • Compare and contrast a variety of supervision approaches/models and techniques that are multicultural sensitive;
  • Analyze evaluation procedures and instruments used to determine supervisee goal attainment;
  • Describe supervisory relationship characteristics and issues.

Meets IBOL’s requirements for new supervision credential not for renewal.

About the Instructor

Katie Whiting

Katherine (Katie) Whiting graduated with her Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Brigham Young University in 2019 and became a registered supervisor with the State of Idaho in 2022. In addition to meeting the state requirements to be a supervisor, Katie also attended a 30 hour CEU course through American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and completed an additional 36 hours of mentorship to become a Designated AAMFT Supervisor.

Katie spent the last 8 years of her career working in a clinic setting meeting with individuals, couples, and families with a variety of presenting problems. Katie is licensed in Idaho, Utah, and Colorado as a Marriage and Family Therapist. In 2021 she opened her own clinic, Treasure Valley Therapy, LLC, with the intention of providing support and opportunity to clients and student interns. Katie specializes in treating sex addiction, sexual trauma, and court-related reunification therapy.

She is passionate about helping train the next generation of therapists and counselors as a way to pay forward the high quality training she has received. Katie has been a guest lecturer at BSU since 2024 and clinical supervisor for the Boise State Master of Arts in Counseling Program since 2024.
