Boise State Hometown Challenge
What is the Hometown Challenge?
Invest in yourself this summer in a way that will move your education forward, provide professional experience, build skills, and grow your network – all while adding value to your local community. We want you to combine your education and creativity to support your local community through our first ever summer Hometown Challenge.
Develop a project that addresses a specific challenge in your local community that can be completed between June 8 – August 14. For example, a project might focus on addressing hunger, affordable housing, public health, or youth development.
Eligibility
Applicants must be:
- Returning Boise State students enrolled in 6 or more credits in fall 2020 (it’s not too late to register)
- Able to commit 80 hours of time between June 8 – August 14
Guidelines
Your project should:
- Address a specific challenge in your local community
- Relate to your field of study and/or your experiences at Boise State
- Develop professional skills such as:
- Teamwork/Collaboration – effectively working with diverse populations, negotiating and managing additional people (i.e. volunteers)
- Problem Solving – using knowledge, facts, and data to make decisions and address your problem
- Leadership – using interpersonal skills to maximize the strengths of others in achieving a common goal
- Intercultural fluency – recognizing how your hometown project connects to the larger issues, challenges, and obstacles of other communities
Requirements
- Project proposal via the application form
- Four one hour, remote project check-in meetings with Career Services
- Completion of PathwayU, a self-guided career assessment
- Completion of our virtual workshop on resumes
- An appointment with a career counselor
One of the following (instructions will be provided):
- Career plan
- Mock interview with Career Services
- An informational interview with a community member related to your challenge
- 3-5 minute video that highlights your summer project
Timeline
- Now – May 31: Applications accepted (due to limited funding, applying early is strongly advised)
Application decisions will be communicated no later than June 5 - June 8: begin the project
- Remote project check-in meetings during the weeks of June 8th, June 29th, July 27th, and August 10th
- August 14: video due
After you successfully complete all of the components of the Hometown Challenge, a $1,000 scholarship will be applied to your student account. You’ll have the full support of the Career Services team in this process!
