ThED Internship Opportunity

The St. Luke’s Applied Research Division is offering a unique and dynamic learning experience in the St. Luke’s Emergency Department (ED) located in downtown Boise. The Total Health in the Emergency Department (ThED) Program will incorporate interdisciplinary student teams into the Boise ED to address factors affecting the patients’ health—beyond the immediate clinical need. These factors include social, economic, and environmental resources that affect quality of life, such as safe housing, availability of foods, and access to health services.

Through appropriate training, the ThED Program will prepare you for interaction with patients to connect them with primary care and community resources. You will be mentored and supervised at St. Luke’s under your ED Social Work mentor. As a part of this program, you will have the unique opportunity to share your experiences and provide your feedback to shape program development.

Qualifications:

You must be organized, detail-oriented, and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. You must be highly reliable, with the ability to follow through on all required shifts, assignments, and tasks. You must have a strong willingness to learn, the ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team, and be willing to provide evaluations and feedback for future program development.

For this unpaid opportunity, students will need to enroll in 3 credits of Academic Internship 493, with junior or senior standing during the summer 2019 semester. Students must be willing to commit to ~11 hours per week on site at St. Luke’s. This time will be scheduled weekly in 3 blocks of 3-4 hours, Monday – Friday, between 8:00am and 5:00pm. Additionally, 3-4 hours of online module training must be completed before the start of the enrolled semester.

Students must:

  • Have proof of health insurance
  • Complete a background check (Anyone with drug or alcohol misdemeanors or felonies is ineligible.)
  • Have proof of the following immunizations:
    • MMR- 2 doses of the vaccine
    • Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis)
    • TB- Negative test within the past year
    • Varicella/Chicken Pox – vaccine or history of chicken pox
    • Hep B- Vaccination or statement of declination
    • Flu Shot- for the current flu season
