Graduate Assistantships

Graduate Assistantships, Policy 7170.4.4.10 statement regarding other employment: A GA cannot work for the university under any compensable arrangement other than the graduate assistantship during the contract period, unless approved by the Dean of the Graduate College.

To request approval from the Graduate College to work in a secondary position to a graduate assistantship, the student must complete the Approval Form. The form will route to the GA supervisor and the secondary position supervisor for approval, then will be routed to the Graduate College for final approval. This form should be completed prior to the hiring of the secondary position.

GAs will have an employee email address (username@boisestate.edu) and a student email (username@u.boisestate.edu). GA email accounts are administered differently than other student-employee email accounts.

Employee provisioning access, including your employee email address, ends on the last day of the month of your last day worked (i.e., if the last day worked is May 1-31, employee provisioned access ends May 31).

Exception: If you are a GA in the spring term and receive a confirmed appointment for the following fall term by June 1, your employee access will continue during the summer.

For those who do not have a confirmed appointment, extended access requests must be submitted by a department sponsor using the Affiliate Access Request Form.

Your student email address will remain active.

Partial Graduate Assistantships can be awarded to graduate students for a work obligation of half the maximum average weekly time commitment (typically 10 hours per week). A Partial GA Award will include payment of at least half the full-time standard tuition rate, half the minimum salary for half the hours worked, and full payment of the GA Group health insurance premium.

How do I know if I’m eligible?

In order to be eligible, the graduate student must be a graduate assistant during the term when the leave is taken and also must have held a graduate assistantship position during the semester prior. In the case of leave taken in the fall, either the summer or the previous spring term will meet this eligibility requirement. You must also meet all the following criteria:

• Enrolled in a graduate degree program at Boise State University
• Enrolled in a minimum of five (5) semester credits
• In good academic standing and making satisfactory progress toward completion of your degree

Fellowships are competitive awards that provide financial support without associated teaching or research responsibilities. They are different from Graduate Assistantships in that Fellows are not employees of the university. Fellowships are internal or external awards that are intended to support a student in full-time course study. They are awarded based on your scholastic ability and the promise of your academic achievement. Applying for fellowships can provide you with professional development skills. In addition to financial support, earning an external fellowship exemplifies excellence in research, writing and scholarship.
