Full-time Study
If you are on an F1 or J1 visa then you must study full time each semester – 12 credits. Only one class (or a maximum of 3 credits) of that full time load can be online. There are very limited exceptions to this requirement.
Final Semester
You can be in less than 12 credits if it is your final semester. However, you must still meet the on-campus enrollment requirements. If summer is your final session then you must be in at least one required on-campus course if you want to remain in the US or apply for post-graduation work authorization (OPT). Please talk to your academic advisor about appropriate class selection and degree planning. Being less than full time can also impact scholarships. Please review your scholarship for details.

Reduced Course Load
There are some limited reasons allowing less than full-time enrollment, such as medical reasons. Please talk with an immigration advisor at the Center for Global Engagement about whether you qualify for a reduced course load before dropping courses. Dropping courses without prior permission from U.S. Immigration can have a very negative impact on your immigration status.
Leave of Absence/Withdrawal
It’s important to inform the Center for Global Engagement if you wish to take a semester off or completely withdraw from Boise State University.
