How do I transfer credits from another school to Boise State?
Check to see if the class is listed on the transfer course equivalency guide on the  Registrar’s website.  If the class is listed, that means Boise State will accept the credit.  If the class is not on that list, take the course description and/or syllabus to the appropriate department at Boise State (Math, Chemistry, Physics, etc.) and get approval and confirmation that the department will accept the outside credits before you take the class somewhere other than Boise State.

I would like to hire a private tutor. Will my sponsor pay for it? If so, what should I do?

Sponsored-Students Responsibilities

Sponsored students are required to understand and comply with their sponsor’s rules, requirements, and procedures. Furthermore, sponsored students must understand their financial, academic, and additional responsibilities at Boise State. These responsibilities are outlined below.

Financial Responsibilities

Monitoring financial guarantee/support letter expiration dates.

As a sponsored student, Boise State must have a valid financial guarantee/support letter on file at all times. If a valid financial guarantee/support letter is on file, Boise State will bill your sponsor each semester automatically. You must be aware of the void/expiration date of your financial guarantee/support letter, and contact your sponsor to request a new financial guarantee/support letter before the void/expiration date. Each student is responsible for ensuring that valid financial guarantees/support letters are sent to Boise State by the sponsor prior to the void/expiration date.

Paying any fees that are not covered by your sponsor.

Boise State will not bill your sponsor for independently acquired fees. These fees include, but are not limited to: housing and meal plan charges, drop fees, parking tickets, student health services, library, or late fees. You are responsible for paying these fees. When you do not pay these fees, your account is put on hold and you cannot register for classes or request official transcripts. Manage your finances carefully to ensure that payments are made on time. For instructions on how to pay your fees, visit Student Financial Services page.

Academic Responsibilities

Academic Standing

  • Each sponsored student is responsible for knowing their sponsor’s rules regarding academic standing, including GPA requirements.
  • Boise State also requires students to maintain a minimum GPA to remain in good academic standing. If a student’s GPA falls below the minimum GPA requirement at Boise State, the student will be placed on academic probation. If the student does not raise their GPA to the minimum requirement while on probation, they are at risk of dismissal from the university. For more information on this policy, visit the Registrar’s website and click “Academic Standing.”

Academic Progress

  • Most sponsors provide students with a limited amount of time to complete their degree. Due to this limited time frame, you must ensure that you are enrolling in the appropriate courses and making timely progress towards your degree completion. You are responsible for keeping track of your degree progress. You need to meet with your academic advisor every semester, follow your degree plan, and enroll in the appropriate courses. Do not make academic decisions based on friends’ advice and always check with your academic advisor before adding or dropping any classes. You are expected to attend class every day, complete assignments on time, communicate with your instructors, check your BroncoMail daily and respond to emails, and to take responsibility in your education. Passing your classes is very important. Repeating classes may delay your graduation.

Enrollment Requirements

You are responsible for understanding your sponsor’s enrollment requirements. Immigration law requires F1 undergraduate students to enroll in at least 12 credits (or 9 credits if graduate student) every Fall and Spring semester.  Your sponsor may require you to enroll in additional credits.

Change of Majors

  • Most sponsors will not allow you to change your major without their approval. Do not change your major without speaking to your sponsor advisor first. When you change your major, your SEVIS record will be updated and you will receive a new I-20. ISS will not issue you a new I-20 unless a new financial guarantee/support letter is sent to ISS verifying that your sponsor has approved your change of major.
  • If you are a SACM sponsored student, you will need to provide SACM with a Change of Major letter. ISS can provide you with this letter.  Use ISS Letter Request Form to make this request.

Additional Responsibilities

Release of Information Form

  • Boise State cannot release any information to your sponsor without your written permission. Signing this form allows ISS to better serve you and your sponsor. You can grant Boise State permission to communicate information to your sponsor by signing a Release of Information Form with ISS. You can get this form at the ISS front desk.
  • SACM Students:  If you sign a Release of Information Form, Boise State sends to your official transcript to SACM at the end of each semester at no cost to you – as long as you have no financial holds on your myBoiseState account. If you have a financial hold on your myBoiseState account, we are unable to send your transcript and you will be responsible for ordering and mailing your official transcript to SACM.

Health Insurance

International students on government sponsorships (KCO and SACM) must submit their current and valid financial guarantees or Financial Support Letters to internationalinfo@boisestate.edu no later than 10 days after each semester’s start date. If sponsorship verifications are not received by that date, the student will be automatically enrolled in and charged for Boise State University’s health insurance plan.  We are unable to remove insurance fees after that date. Generally, your sponsor provides you with health insurance. Please talk to your sponsor regarding your coverage.
