Extensions and Departure

Extension

In order to be considered for a program extension your department must contact a Center for Global Engagement (CGE) advisor to request the form at least 30 days prior to the expiration of your current DS-2019.  A DS-2019 program extension will not extend your visa.  It will allow you to remain in the U.S. (even if your visa has expired) to complete your program until your revised program end date.  You will need to show appropriate funding amounts and health insurance for the new program duration.

You cannot extend past the maximum allowed time in your J category.  Not all extensions will be possible.

Transfer

It may be possible to transfer to another J program at another institution if your program objectives remain the same.  Please contact an advisor in the Center for Global Engagement in advance to discuss and facilitate the transfer.

Departure

Please contact your advisor in the Center for Global Engagement as soon as you have made departure or travel plans so we can complete your immigration record appropriately.

Early Departure: If you are completing your program and leaving Boise State more than 15 days before the end date on your DS-2019 you must let CGE know.  This includes any J-2 dependent(s) who plan to return home early.

30-Day Grace Period: You have a 30-day grace period from your program end date to leave the country.  You cannot continue working on your program activities past the end date on your DS-2019, but you can pack up, make travel arrangements, and/or travel domestically during these 30 days.

Please keep all of your documents!  You will need them in the future if you want to return to the U.S. for work or study.
