Student Veterans and the GI Bill
Global Learning (GL) encourages veterans to study abroad, with the possibility of using GI Bill benefits. Early planning is essential due to certain limitations on covered expenses. GL and Veterans’ Services are available to help navigate the process.
Key Rules for Using VA Education Benefits Abroad:
- Courses must apply to your degree.
- Programs at foreign institutions must be VA-approved.
- VA may only cover fees if study abroad is required by your degree
Recent Updates: The Veterans Auto and Education Improvement Act of 2022 expanded the types of study abroad programs eligible for GI Bill benefits. Updated guidance from the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) now allows broader opportunities for student veterans to study at foreign institutions.
Things to Consider:
- Will your military service affect your visa application?
- How will locals perceive your military experience?
- What is the cultural perception of the U.S. military in your host country?
- How will prior international experiences influence your study abroad experience?
- What will happen to your Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH)?
- How will you cover miscellaneous expenses not covered by VA benefits?
Checklist:
- Attend a Study Abroad 101 info session.
- Meet with your academic advisor to confirm the required courses.
- Work with GL to select an appropriate study abroad program.
- Clarify your program budget and consult Veteran Services to understand VA coverage.
