Overview:
At Boise State University’s MS in Genetic Counseling program, students complete three 8-week rotations that occur in summer, fall, and spring of second year, which can take place anywhere in the United States. Since the program’s inception, we have built a strong network of supervisors and clinical rotation sites across the country, and are looking to add more partners. We are looking for new clinical supervisors who share our teaching philosophy and are interested in working with us long term. While there are no minimum requirements for how many students you take, and how often (we understand the many competing and often unexpected demands that can impact the capacity to take students), we invest a great deal of time, training, and continuing support in our supervisors and believe that this leads to a better experience for supervisors and students alike.
Requirements:
Clinical supervisors must be certified genetic counselors (through ABGC or ABMG) with at least one year of clinical work experience. Certified genetic counselors with less than one year of experience can participate in a more limited way, i.e., they cannot be a primary supervisor and cannot sign off on Participatory Cases. Supervisors must provide a copy of their CV and proof of supervision training, which can be done through our program (and is eligible for 0.3 Category 1 CEUs, paid for by our program) or through another program, NSGC, etc. Supervisors must also complete one to two hours of webinar-based training annually, in line with ACGC requirements, and provided by our program.
Benefits:
We value the time and effort our supervisors put into working with our students. Each student’s primary supervisor (responsible for their overall rotation experience, including completion of two clinical evaluations) is eligible for a $550 stipend per student per rotation. This can be shared with other supervisors, and is not a requirement. The stipend also comes with status as Adjunct Faculty at Boise State University, providing access to the library, continuing education opportunities, and more. More details on this process are available by inquiry.
Our dedicated Fieldwork Coordinator is available to answer questions and provide support as needed and help with any fieldwork-related processes. We strive to be prompt in our communication with supervisors, usually responding same-day. We also maintain a Supervisor Handbook that is regularly updated and features tutorials for our case-logging and evaluation platform.
Those who are new to supervision, or who just want a refresher, are welcome to join our monthly Supervisor Mentorship group, which is facilitated by our Program Director and an experienced clinical supervisor.
Locations:
Although our program is based at Boise State University, our students can participate in clinical rotations anywhere in the United States, including virtual/telehealth rotations. We respect the needs of local genetic counseling training programs and always ensure that we do not interfere with these. Currently we are most interested in working with clinical supervisors who do not work with other training programs, but are also open to supervisors who are able to supervise for multiple programs.
