Look Closely

November 1 – December 15, 2024

Look Smart by John Lloyd is an exhibition of artworks that explore an instinct to collect, organize, and present in a way that merges the primal with the intellectual.

Working with found and repurposed materials, Lloyd’s work takes a casual approach to more formal ideas of composition and order. Look Smart was created from Lloyd’s inventory, a once cluttered studio, with the intent to clear space mentally and physically. Now transformed into multiple artworks, they are meant to represent the transfiguration from raw potential to something realized. Through this exhibition, Lloyd invites the audience to reconsider the simplicity and ordinariness of objects as something extraordinary.

Exhibiting in the Student Union Building

Student Union Fine Arts Gallery

Located on the second floor of the SUB above the main staircase

Student Union Fine Arts Gallery, Boise State University, is located at 1700 University Drive on the second floor of the Student Union Building. Admission is free to all students, staff, and community members. Parking is available for an hourly fee in metered spaces and in the Lincoln and Brady Garages.

Sustainability Center Student Art Gallery

Located on the first floor of the SUB at the entrance between the Atrium and the food court

The Sustainability Center Student Art Gallery is located at 1700 University Drive on the second floor of the Student Union Building. Admission is free to all students, staff, and community members. Parking is available for an hourly fee in metered spaces and in the Lincoln and Brady Garages.

SUB Art Collection

The Student Union Permanent Art Collection was established to introduce students, faculty, staff and community members to a wide range of artwork from multiple traditions and periods in art history. Encompassing work from various artists with unique backgrounds and cultures, and employing numerous media, the collection creates a diverse mixture of style, content and subject matter. Our mission is to create a sense of home for students to study, to meet friends, to make connections, and we believe that art should be an integral part of that shared experience. So we have made available several collections–through commissions, through generous gifts–in the Student Union Building.

We do this through several avenues–commissioning work, buying work, and accepting gifts of work.

When you purchase work from the Student Union Fine Art Gallery or the Trueblood Pop Up Gallery, you support the fund to buy new art for the Student Union. Artists agree to a 40% commission; this commission is directed to a Foundational account that serves as a savings account from which we can purchase works of art.
