Tax returns for International Students and Scholars

F-1 and J-1 international students and scholars who were present in the U.S. during any portion of the past calendar year may be required to file certain tax forms with the U.S. federal government. This is true whether or not you worked in the U.S., gained income in the U.S., or received a scholarship during the past calendar year.

Boise State employees do not complete tax returns for individuals. Below are resources to assist with tax return preparation.

Glacier Tax Prep

IRS Form 8843

What is the purpose of form 8843?

Form 8843 is not an income tax return. This form is an informational statement required by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) required for all F-1/J-1 foreign nationals (and their F-2/J-2 dependents) who are nonresident aliens for tax purposes even if you earned no U.S. sourced income during the calendar year.
