The Visiting Artist and Scholar Program at Boise State is delighted to present Jonathan Fardy, Associate Professor of Art History and Chair of the Department of Art at Idaho State University. Fardy will lecture on “Althusser’s ‘Photographism’: Lensing Althusser through Laruelle.”

This presentation critically reexamines Louis Althusser’s well-known 1970 essay, “Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses,” through François Laruelle’s “non-philosophical” lens. Specifically, it traces the “photographocentric” logic of Althusser’s attempt to grasp “ideology in general.” Fardy argues that this theoretical drive is underwritten by a set of analogical images that are at once theoretically indispensable and necessarily disavowed.

Fardy’s research examines the interrelationships between aesthetics, theory and politics. He is the author of a number of books, including Laruelle and Art: The Aesthetics of Non-Philosophy; The Real Is Radical: Marx after Laruelle; and, most recently, Ideology and Interpellation: Anti-Humanism to Non-Philosophy.
