Sawtooth Writing Retreat presented by the Hemingway Center

September 14, 2023 - September 17, 2023

Calling aspiring writers and night sky enthusiasts! The Hemingway Center at Boise State launches a three-day event (September 14-17, 2023) in the heart of America’s first International Dark Skies Reserve. The Retreat is designed for adults and students who wish to elevate their nonfiction writing skills, learn about the night sky environment, and connect with a community of writers. Participants will receive instruction from award-winning authors Kim Cross and Paul Bogard, with a focus on generating and experimenting with new work in groups and in one-on-one meetings with the instructors.

The schedule includes writing workshops, talks by biologists, star-gazing through professional telescopes with experienced astronomers, bonfires, delicious food, fishing on-site, hikes, and more.

Instructor Paul Bogard is the author of the “End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light,” which has been translated into 5 languages and was shortlisted for the PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. The Boston Globe calls it “a lyrical, far-reaching book. Part elegy, part call-to-arms, “The End of Night” feels like an essential addition to the literature of nature.” Paul has written about environmental issues for the New York Times, and the Washington Post, among others, and teaches environmental literature and writing at Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Instructor Kim Cross is the author of “What Stands in a Storm: A True Story of Love and Resilience in the Worst Superstorm in History.” The book won the Fitzgerald Museum Literary Prize for Excellence in Writing and the American Society of Journalists and Authors nonfiction book award. Kim is a New York Times best-selling author and journalist known for meticulously reported narrative nonfiction. A full-time freelance writer, her work has been recognized in “Best of” lists by the New York Times, the Columbia Journalism Review, and Best American Sports Writing. She teaches feature writing for Harvard Extension School.

Founded in 1986, the Hemingway Center at Boise State is a cultural and artistic hub on campus that supports a variety of readings, performances, events, and educational experiences for students and the community.
