“Along the Street of Smiths: The Art and Industry of Armor in Augsburg”
Dr. Chassica Kirchhoff
Assistant Curator of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts
Detroit Institute of Arts

Join the Department of Art, Design and Visual Studies for a lecture exploring the history and art history of European plate armor through the lens of the city of Augsburg, located in the present-day German state of Bavaria. Dr. Chassica Kirchhoff will trace some of the topographical, environmental, social, and commercial factors that laid the foundations for the city’s precipitous ascent to prominence as one of the foremost centers of the armorer’s art during the reigns of Holy Roman Emperors Maximilian I (1459–1519) and Charles V (1500–1558), as well as the ecological, cultural, and artistic impacts of Augsburg’s ascent. She will introduce the constellations of armorers and artists who illuminated late medieval and early modern Augsburg, establishing their city as a pre-eminent site of creativity and founding dynasties of makers who would influence the martial and visual cultures of Western and Central Europe for over a century.
