Boise State Esports has officially crossed a historic milestone, securing 1,500 wins this month. This achievement marks another defining moment in a program that has quickly become one of the most successful in collegiate esports.
The Doc Era Rolls On
Head Coach Doc Haskell has been at the helm of Boise State Esports since its inception. He has meticulously developed routines and systems that were not only the best in the industry, but many of them were groundbreaking. Haskell’s success certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed at Boise State.
“Congratulations to Doc on his 1,500th career win!! Doc was one of the first people I sought out when I first arrived in Boise because he was a coach on Boise State’s campus who created a championship-level impact year in and year out and someone I could learn a great deal from.” said Jeramiah Dickey, Director of Athletics at Boise State. “What he has done for this University and the campus community is inspiring. We talk about doing EPIC and the Boise State esports program has achieved that under Doc’s leadership. We can’t wait to see what the next 1,500 wins look like in the future!”
Built, Not Bought
Since launching in 2017, Boise State Esports has risen to national prominence, building championship-caliber rosters across titles like Overwatch, Rocket League, Valorant, and League of Legends. From thrilling reverse sweeps to dominant undefeated seasons, the Broncos have stacked up wins while shaping the future of collegiate competition.
With a mix of veteran leadership and young talent, the program continues to climb. Boise State teams have qualified for national championships, won conference titles, and consistently finished in the top tier of every league they’ve joined. The 1,500th win came just this week, when Boise State clinched their spot in next weeks Mountain West Overwatch Championship, and the victory didn’t go unnoticed by leaders in the collegiate esports space.

Praise for Boise State Esports
Two of the most respected voices in collegiate esports shared their praise for the program’s achievement. Joey Gawrysiak, Executive Director of Esports at Syracuse University, had many positive things to say about the program.
“It isn’t surprising to me that Doc has managed to rack up 1,500 wins across esports titles,” said Gawrysiak. “Boise State has had incredible teams for almost a decade now. What does surprise me is that I only account for about a third of those wins! But in all seriousness, what Doc has built — and continues to build — at Boise State is raising the bar for esports across the country. Huge accomplishment for him, his staff, and his students. Can’t wait to see more milestones — hopefully this time it won’t take 1500 tries!”
Dan Clerke, Director of Esports at Maryville University, also gave praise for Doc’s leadership.
“Doc Haskell is a pillar of the college esports coaching space,” said Clerke. Congratulations on your 1500th win, this is a huge achievement. Looking forward to you joining me in the 2500 club soon!!”
In Rare Air
Especially with the addition of Kelsey Moser to the coaching staff, Boise State now joins an elite group of collegiate esports programs with this many wins—showing that sustained success in esports is not only possible, but thriving in the Treasure Valley. In fact, the Broncos are the first Division I team to cross 1,500 wins.

Success On A National Stage
Boise State hasn’t just owned the Mountain West—they’ve shown they can hang with anyone in the country.
The program has racked up four national championships:
- Overwatch: NACE (2021), PlayVS (2020)
- Madden (Wacey Williams): NACE and PlayVS (2021)
Wacey’s back-to-back national titles in Madden helped cement Boise State’s reputation for excellence across genres—not just team-based titles.
A Few That Got Away
Of course, even juggernauts have heartbreak.
Boise State’s Rocket League team made deep national runs in both 2023 and 2024, only to come up short. They fell to Northwood in the 2023 CRL Finals and then lost a nail-biter to Ball State in the 2024 CECC Championship. Both losses stung, but only underscored just how consistently the Broncos are competing at the highest level.
