Broncos Have Blockbuster Weekend in MW Finals

The holiday season is awash with good news for Boise State fans in both traditional sports and esports. The Broncos started the weekend off with a bang by winning the Mountain West football championship match against UNLV. With the championship clinched and goalposts deposited in the Boise River, the football team’s esports counterparts have continued piling up victories for Boise State. The Broncos won two more Mountain West titles in College Football 25 and Rocket League over the same weekend.

College Football 25

The first MW esports title the Broncos won was for College Football 25. Boise State student Matthew Wallace won the championship with an impressive 66-6 scoreline against San Jose State University. Both players played the match outside Albertsons Stadium on the same day as the MW football championship. Boise State Esports also broadcasted the match live on Youtube. Later on, Mountain West officials presented Wallace with the championship trophy on the blue turf.

The championship win capped off an exhilarating premiere season for College Football 25. Earlier this year, right before the fall semester started, the entire Boise State football team visited the Boise State Esports Arena for a College Football 25 special event. The event served as both the capstone for the football team’s Bronco Olympics preseason competition, and as a celebration for the introduction of CFB25 into the esports program. Now, four months later, Boise State holds the championship title in both College Football 25 and the actual Mountain West football championship the game emulates.

Rocket League

The Broncos won another championship title the following day on December 7th. Fans filled the Boise State Esports Arena to capacity to watch the Broncos beat SJSU in the Mountain West Rocket League championship. Veteran players Cade Hall, Emiliano Flores, and Gabriel Reynolds swept the championship match 4-0 against the Spartans. The match was the 5th consecutive MW championship win for Boise State Rocket League and the 13th MW championship win overall, across all games.

The weekend festivities ended with the Rocket League team visiting Idaho Central arena during the Boise State vs Washington State basketball game. The players got to walk out onto the arena during half time to be honored as the Mountain West Rocket League champions.

Emiliano Flores, one of the players on Boise State’s Rocket League team, was interviewed right after the championship game. In the interview, Flores reflected on the major success the Rocket League team has seen in the past few years.

“Is this three Mountain West wins that I have now?” said Flores in a postgame interview. “I think we gotta go for four, maybe five if I go for my masters. Fill up the whole hand like Tom Brady.”
