Boise State celebrates 1,000 wins for esports program
Boise State’s record of 1,000 wins is the most for any division 1 university by a large margin
BOISE, Idaho – Boise State Esports is celebrating the program’s 1,000th win in a special ceremony on Monday, October 24th 2022. This milestone is the culmination of over six years of competitive varsity matches.
The Broncos will celebrate this achievement with a special ceremony in downtown Boise at the Boise State Esports arena. Members of the press and university officials are invited and encouraged to attend the event. The Boise State Esports arena is located at 301 S Capitol Blvd, Boise, ID. The event takes place from 6:30-7:00pm.
Boise State Esports was founded by Dr. Chris Haskell and Dr. Brett Shelton in 2017. Boise State Esports started out simple with a League of Legends exhibition match in the student union building. Livestreams were broadcast out of head coach Chris “Doc” Haskell’s campus office. Back in 2019, in a local news broadcast, Doc Haskell laid out the ambitious goal “to be the biggest, best, the Alabama of Esports.” Over six years, nine varsity games, and 1,400 total matches later, Boise State Esports looks to be achieving that goal.
Despite its humble beginnings, Boise State Esports has become a top Esports program nationwide. It has competed in a variety of games from MOBAs to card games. Overall, Overwatch, League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm, Rocket League, Hearthstone, Valorant, Halo, Madden, and Super Smash Bros have all been featured as varsity games supported by the program. Boise State has won multiple prestigious championships in organizations such as the Mountain West and the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Every game Boise State has competed in has had an overall winning record and the Broncos are a common sight at championship matches around the country.
