BSU Credit Classes

These two writing-intensive classes prepare students for English 101. (These are Pass/Fail classes. Passing each class earns you three elective credits.) The two courses differ by English skill level. To find out your level, please take the ESOL Placement Test, offered by the Assessment Center (phone: 208-426-2762, location: BSU Academic and Services building, 1464 University Dr., room 115). NOTE: You have to be admitted to BSU as a full- or part-time student in order to take these classes.

ESOL Placement Test is an English proficiency test that is used to determine which English writing course is the best for you.

Course Descriptions

  • ENGL 122: ACADEMIC ESL Writing II. Practice in English composition with an emphasis on writing processes (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing) and concepts such as audience, purpose, and thesis. Special emphasis placed on the connections between reading and writing and on developing vocabulary and grammatical complexity. PREREQ: English-as-a-Second-Language placement exam recommendation.
  • ENGL 123: ACADEMIC ESL Writing III. Preparing for the demands of academic writing in English, and refining communicative strategies through reading and revision. Successful completion of ENGL 123 qualifies the student for entrance into ENGL 101. PREREQ: English-as-a-Second-Language placement exam recommendation or a grade of Pass (P) in ENGL 122.English 123 has a special feature: the English 123 Conference on Language. Students in this class share their language experiences with the BSU community. They give short presentations to the public based on their struggles and strengths as multilingual language users.
