Raised by a hard-working family in Star, Melissa Ronquillo knew through experiencing the struggles her parents faced, who are immigrants from El Salvador and Mexico, that she would pursue education and follow her passion for healthcare. Though she wasn’t able to spend as much time with her family as she would have liked since they worked so much, her parents wanted the best for Ronquillo and encouraged her studies.
“My parents are my motivation,” said Ronquillo. “If it wasn’t for them and their moral support, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”
After a freshman year struggling to navigate the new world of college, Ronquillo found the TRIO STEM Scholars program as a sophomore at Boise State. The program provided support and a community she could relate to as a first-generation student and aspiring healthcare professional. She has also received scholarships and advising that have bolstered her success in the nursing program.
When Ronquillo graduates from the program she hopes to work in outpatient and possibly aesthetic nursing. Eventually she would like to continue her education. However, she knows from life experience that work-life balance is important.
“I want to grow in my career while also making time for my family and friends.”
