Focus and Responsibilities

I am excited about the opportunity to serve the college as the Assistant Dean for Teacher Education. This role allows me to work in my area of passion to support teacher education program, both undergraduate and graduate, that are housed in the College of Education as well as across campus. Programs include: secondary education content areas, elementary education, special education, blended early childhood/early childhood special education, bilingual education, English as a New Language, literacy, and online teaching. Each of these programs engage in a collaborative process of inquiry and continuous improvement that ensures the highest quality educator preparation. After initial certification we also support the addition of a variety of endorsements and educational leadership opportunities as teachers continue to grow across their lifespan.

My passion for teacher education leads me to spend one day a week in our local schools. I am committed to working with professional year teacher candidates as they move from the university to the classroom.
Being embedded in schools, working with mentor teachers, principals, teacher candidates, and early career teachers informs all the work I do. It is my daily reminder of why I do this work: to improve learning opportunities for P-12 students.

Research Interests

My research interests are focused on improving teaching and teacher education. Since 2013, I have been involved in studying a new model of teacher induction that places first and second year teachers in inquiry communities to extend learning that begins in preservice teacher education.

Other areas of teacher education research include teacher education pedagogy, preservice teacher supervision, preparing teacher educators. Research interests also include the area of literacy instruction, specifically writing teacher preparation, writing instruction and writing motivation for K-9 students.

I have been involved in advocacy for Gifted and Talented students, in particular Twice Exceptional students.
