Books In Every Home, a Boise State Vertically Integrated Project (VIP) class, will be on display at the VIP/Maker Showcase 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14.
Faculty and students from Books In Every Home visited Taft Elementary to distribute books to first graders on Friday, Nov 1. The first graders received An Elephant and Piggie Biggie by Mo Willems and two additional books. VIP members read aloud one story to students, and one first grader said, “It’s in Arabic! Now my mom can read with me” when she received the Arabic/English bilingual book.
Boise State students in the Books In Every Home VIP work directly with local teachers to raise money to buy books for elementary students from low-income and refugee backgrounds. Eun Hye Son, associate professor in the Department of Literacy Language and Culture, co-teaches the course with Tara Penry from the Department of English.
The Books in Every Home VIP class is finishing its second semester. The group plans to go global in the spring by forming partnerships with secondary schools in Rwanda, coordinated by Boise State Fulbright Scholar and lecturer Margaret Bundy. Books in Every Home welcomes students of all majors and class levels every semester.
The VIP/Maker Showcase is the first event to mesh Vertically Integrated Projects – classes in which students work with faculty on research and community projects – and the MakerLab – the creative space in the College of Innovation and Design that offers equipment including 3D printers, CNC Mills, sewing machines, soldering irons, and other tools for students and faculty.
