Literacy Resources

In the Boise State Literacy Lab, children in grades K-12 are tutored either one-on-one or in small groups by undergraduate teacher candidates. These teacher candidates are simultaneously completing coursework in literacy assessment and instruction, and they are provided constant support and feedback by university professors and graduate students.

Application Information

Enrollment opens at the beginning of each semester (August and January) and is limited. We try to accommodate as many children as possible, but our capacity will vary each semester depending upon the number of undergraduate teacher candidates available to tutor.

Welcome to the Idaho Comprehensive Literacy Assessments (ICLAs) at Boise State University. We offer testing to Boise State students as part of coursework/programs (internal testing), and we offer testing for those who need to take the assessments but are not Boise State students (external testing).

External testers (non-BSU students) can take the ICLC through the Lee Pesky Learning Center. The “course” covers Standards 1, 2, 3, and 4 and is $385, paid through Lee Pesky. You will receive a letter certifying that you have completed the Idaho State Department of Education course requirements for literacy instruction. Some people don’t need or want credits for the course. If you need credit for the course, you would enroll in the Lee Pesky course first (ICLC is $385), then register for credit with Boise State Extended Studies (4 credits x $60/credit = $240) for a total of $625. Lee Pesky Learning Center

An estimated 1 in 5 children will experience some form of language-based difficulty or disability; the most commonly occurring is dyslexia. Based on these numbers, today’s educators must be aware of the signs and characteristics of dyslexia to identify and support these learners early, when the most significant impact can be made. Kids whose language-based disabilities are recognized later in their schooling have likely already experienced feelings of failure and distress and need the support of knowledgeable, compassionate, and responsive educators even more.

Boise State University is proud to be an approved professional development provider for the dyslexia standards in accordance with Idaho Code 33-1811 (4). This law states that no later than the 2023-2024 school year, “…all instructional staff members … shall be required to have received professional development specific to providing instruction and intervention to students with characteristics of dyslexia.”

We look forward to partnering with educational professionals, including administrators, paraprofessionals and teachers, to provide education, support, and resources so that we may all be best equipped to serve the students who enter our spaces.
