[Narrator]: Learning the ins and outs of secondary teacher education at Boise State can be overwhelming, but we are here to help make your experience as easy and smooth as possible. This video will provide you with the tools and resources you will need to successfully become a secondary teacher through Boise State. It is important to note that for some subjects secondary education at Boise State is an emphasis and not a standalone degree. This means that throughout your time at Boise State you will likely work with two advisors: one from your content area and one from the College of Education. This differs from the Elementary Ed program which is its own major within the College of Education. For Secondary Ed, your major college and the College of Ed are working together to provide you with the tools you need to be successful both in your subject field and in teaching that subject to your future students. This is the most recently updated list of programs that offer majors in secondary education.
(Secondary Education degrees available: Art Education; English; History, Multidisciplinary and Social Studies; Music Education; Physical Education/Health; Political Science; Theater; World Language: Spanish, French, German; Mathematics; Physics; Biological Science; Chemistry; Computer Science; Earth and Space Science; Engineering; Geosciences.
[Narrator]: If you are considering becoming a teacher but aren’t quite ready to commit, don’t worry. You have plenty of time to take all of the coursework that you need. Even if you wait a year to decide, this timeline will help keep you on track. First, take your General Studies courses through Boise State. These are required for all majors, so most of them will not set you back if you change your major. If you are considering teaching, we encourage you to take our intro-level education classes. These are a great way to get a feel for education before committing. When you are ready, declare your teaching emphasis. Consult your undergraduate catalog or a Secondary Ed advisor to learn about all of your options. Make sure to take your lower-level content and education courses at this time. After you take your lower level content and education courses, it is time to apply to the program. Through Taskstream, you will submit your initial application to Teacher Education. If you qualify to join the program you will be interviewed by a panel of Boise State program coordinators. Once you have been admitted to the program you will take your mid-level education and content courses, and you will begin thinking about taking your Praxis tests. Be sure to meet with your advisor to ensure that you are staying on track. While in your year of Teacher Education you will apply to your professional year. You will do this through your existing Taskstream account. You will also need to complete a background check with the College of Ed at this time. Visit their website to learn more about how the college will determine if you are on track, pass the background check, and meet the 3.0 GPA requirement, and will then let you know if you are admitted into professional year. Finally, pass your Praxis tests, take your final upper-level content and education courses, and begin your student teaching in your final semester. From there, the College of Ed will work with you to begin your certification process. Don’t forget to meet with your advisor regularly both within your program and in the College of Ed to make sure that you are on track, both through your content and education coursework. Not communicating with your advisor can result in you not graduating on time, so keep in touch. Boise State is here to help you through every step of your journey through the Teacher Education Program. If you have questions please contact your advisor or the College of Education. There is a lot of helpful information on the Teacher Education website as well. While the process can be overwhelming, we are here to ensure that every step of your undergraduate journey leaves you feeling supported and prepared to be the best teacher that you can be. Go Broncos!
