Zach Provant Seminar

November 11 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm MST

Title: Political and Economic Obstacles for Hazard Maps: a case study from Juneau, Alaska

Abstract: If the science is sound, why are hazard maps repeatedly rejected nationwide? In this seminar, I’ll share key findings from my avalanche and landslide risk research in Alaska. In particular, I’ll focus on how and why Juneau’s General Assembly rejected new hazard maps in 2023. I’ll then broaden out to discuss the growing pushback against hazard maps across the United States. To wrap things up, I’ll discuss alternative ideas to keep hazard zone residents safe, such as the development of community-engaged hazard maps and technical solutions beyond maps. I’ll make sure to leave plenty of room for conversation and questions.
