Engaging K-12 students in Cryospheric Science is an important part of our mission. We work with two local outreach groups to bring snow science to young students.
Discovery Center of Idaho – Snow Day
Twice per year Snow Day comes to the Discovery Center of Idaho in Boise. Hands-on demos show students the physics of avalanches and the importance of the seasonal snowpack to our water supply. Examples of NASA’s snow research are given in several presentations throughout the day.
Bogus Basin Snow School
We are partnering with the Bogus Basin Snow School, a non-profit which provides transportation, clothing, equipment, and instruction in an outdoor field setting 15 miles from Boise to K-12 students. This season we will help train volunteers, provide equipment and participate in field trips to demonstrate state-of-the-art techniques for snow measurements, along with new technologies we are developing to improve our ability to measure snow properties rapidly at high resolution.
