Emergency Absence Notification

Before submitting an Emergency Absence Notification

Before submitting an Emergency Absence Notification request, please note that the Office of the Dean of Students:

  • Cannot excuse students from classes or coursework or control attendance/grading policies
  • Can help students contact their instructors if they are unable to reach out themselves

Students who need to be absent are expected to:

  • Review their course syllabi for attendance and grading policies
  • Communicate their absences directly to their instructors when possible

What to do when a student needs to be absent

Able to contact instructors?

If students need to miss classes/coursework due to illness, injury, personal difficulties or any other reason, and they are able to contact their instructors, students should notify their instructors as soon as possible.

It may also be helpful to consider the following resources and options:

  • Review the Student Absences page and policy
  • Complete the Educational Access Center’s Request for Services if you have a diagnosed condition (e.g., are neurodivergent, have a mental health condition, medical condition, or any other disability) and are needing temporary or long-term academic accommodations
  • Contact Student Outreach and Assistance to discuss your specific situation at (208) 426-1527 or email studentoutreach@boisestate.edu

Unable to contact instructors?

When made aware of an emergency situation that prevents a student from contacting their instructors directly, the Office of the Dean of Students may send an Emergency Absence Notification to the student’s instructors.

This notification email is meant to inform instructors of the student’s unanticipated absence due to emergency circumstances, such as:

  • Acute medical or mental health emergencies, excluding communicable diseases
  • Family crises, including the loss of a loved one
  • Safety-related concerns

Does this sound like your situation? If so, complete the Emergency Absence Notification Request Form below.
