When Students Stop Engaging

Questions to reflect on when students stop engaging

When students slowly disengage, it can be a cause for concern, but sometimes students are just problem solving on their own. Here are some questions to reflect on:

  1. What kind of of changes have I noticed that are causing concern?
  2. Has the student demonstrated any previous reason to be concerned for their safety? (e.g., disclosure of existing mental health or physical health diagnoses)
  3. What is the goal of my outreach?
  4. At what point do I need to pass this along through an Academic Alert?

Dear [STUDENT NAME],

Over the last few weeks, I’ve noticed a change in your engagement with this course. This makes me concerned that you may have additional challenges going on that are impacting your academic success. I would like an opportunity to connect with you so we can work together to identify the stressors, help you access resources, and set you on a path to success in this course. Would that be helpful?

Hoping to hear from you either way,
[YOUR NAME]
