Overview

The Keith and Catherine Stein Luminary is a state-of-the-art, all-digital museum space containing touch-activated glass walls, 26K-lumen projectors, and 7.1 digital surround sound, producing a range of immersive, interactive and sensory experiences. This fall semester, the Center for Teaching and Learning is partnering with the School of the Arts to facilitate a Luminary Faculty Learning Community (FLC). This FLC will bring together instructors from multiple disciplines to explore the pedagogical possibilities of the Luminary. Faculty will work hands-on with facilitators to develop interactive exhibitions and immersive presentations for their students within the Luminary space.

This year, the Luminary FLC will be divided into two cohorts:

  • Luminary Scholars 1.0: This cohort is designed especially for faculty who are new to the Luminary and are interested in learning how it can be leveraged in their teaching. After receiving instruction on how to use the Luminary, participants will each design two learning experiences that could potentially be used in a class they teach. One experience will utilize the Luminary’s gallery features to present a curated collection of images to students. The other experience will utilize the projection capabilities of the Luminary to share content at a large scale with students. Eight faculty will be selected to participate in Luminary Scholars 1.0. They will meet biweekly (eight times) in-person over the course of the fall 2022 semester, with meetings lasting approximately two hours. Participants who successfully complete the FLC will each receive a $300 stipend.
  • Luminary Scholars 2.0: This cohort is designed for faculty who have completed Luminary Scholars 1.0 and are ready to take the next step in using the interactive digital space. Participants will work closely with the facilitators to learn user engagement software to design unique learning experiences for their students. The skills mastered in this cohort will expand upon what they learned in Luminary Scholars 1.0. Four faculty will be selected to participate in Luminary Scholars 2.0. They will meet biweekly (eight times) in-person for both the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters, with meetings lasting approximately two hours. Participants who successfully complete the FLC will each receive a $600 stipend ($300 per semester).
