End of Semester Guide to Reflect on Your Teaching

As each semester comes to a close, it often feels like the end of a chapter. While preparing for finals and wrapping up grading can be a hectic time, it’s also a valuable opportunity to pause and reflect—on what you’ve accomplished, the challenges you’ve faced, the opportunities you’ve embraced, and the questions or curiosities that still linger.

Reflecting on your teaching practices is a powerful way to grow as an educator (in fact, we offer a Reflective Teaching Certificate to support this very process!). To help guide your reflection, we created a simple Reflection Pyramid. Take as much or as little time as you have to consider the following prompts:

  • 1 Aha moment
  • 2 Things that worked well
  • 3 Things that brought you joy
  • 4 Big takeaways
  • 3 Changes you want to make
  • 2 Goals for next semester
  • 1 Question or curiosity you currently have about teaching

As this semester wraps up, remember that a new one will begin before you know it. Use these 3+ small steps to help you transition smoothly and intentionally into the next.

Do you have a teaching win you’re proud of, or a question you’d like to explore further? We’d love to hear from you! Email us at ctl@boisestate.edu.
