Most of us have been there, we come to class, ready to start with a great activity that builds on the at-home reading, and only a few students have read the text. John Warner wrote an article in 2016 on this exact topic, “When Students Won’t Do the Reading” and now, seven years later, expands on his thoughts and recommendations about how to think about this common issue from a learning-focused perspective and ways to address it in this recent Insight Higher Ed publication. Three themes stand out from the article among others:
- Assigning purposeful readings
- Teaching productive reading for learning
- Making effective pedagogical reading choicesÂ
