College of Engineering Scholarship Recipients
Connie Barzangi
Major: Construction Management
Expected Graduation: Summer 2025
Hometown: San Diego, California
My name is Connie Barzangi, and I’m a junior at Boise State. I’m a non-traditional student, and I am seeking a second bachelor’s degree in construction management. My first degrees were in math and human biology. I graduated from UCSD in 2012 and was planning on going to medical school, but upon successful completion of a 2-year internship, I decided otherwise. Fast-forward to 2018, I had just bought my first home, and it needed some renovations. I quickly fell in love with the construction process and decided to enroll. This degree has combined my passion for design and analytics; I never thought I could enjoy waking up and going to class. After graduation, I plan to work for a construction company and learn as much as I can about the virtual construction processes. Many companies have already started to utilize these programs. One instance is how companies are applying virtual reality. This allows clients to see color changes in walls in a blink of an eye, without ever having even to apply paint to the wall. This is so fascinating to me! After having spent time at Boise State with their amazing faculty, they have also opened my eyes as to how important thoughtful faculty are and what a difference these people can make in a student’s future. I’d love to someday be able to be this difference in a student’s life and would love to give back to the community in the form of teaching.
What does receiving this scholarship mean to you?
During this strange time, living in the pandemic of Covid-19, I was laid off from my job, and that same day I was notified of this scholarship. The moment was a roller coaster of emotion. If not for this scholarship, I might not be able to attend Boise State in the fall of 2020! Having been laid off for an undetermined time has really affected my monetary situation, and knowing that I will have help in the Fall is remarkable, and I’m forever grateful. Thank you!
“Without people like you in this world, many livelihoods would remain daydreams. I’ve never received a scholarship, and knowing that people, like yourself, are willing to give back to the community, makes me feel privileged to be a part of this world. Thank you for putting your confidence in me.”

Corey Glassey
Major: Civil Engineering
Minor: Applied Mathematics
Expected Graduation: Spring 2024
Hometown: Caldwell, Idaho
My name is Corey Glassey, and I am a civil engineering student at Boise State. I love to play guitar, chess and write songs in my free time. I also served in the US Navy as an aircraft electrician. My number one, short term goal is to graduate from Boise State in the spring of 2021 with a BS in civil engineering and a minor in applied mathematics, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. My long-term goals are to pass the FE and PE exam and become a legitimate, practicing professional engineer. I have an internship lined up for this summer with a company called HDR. I will be working as part of a bridge design team! I see myself working as a structural engineer in the future.
What does receiving this scholarship mean to you?
Receiving this scholarship means a lot to me. It means financial security. It takes away the burdensome thoughts of always wondering how the bills will be paid. It also assures me that my goals can be accomplished. Receiving this scholarship will impact my future in several ways. It’s sometimes easy to wonder sometimes why I go the extra mile in my studies. Being selected for this scholarship lets me know that the long hours I’ve put into my schooling have not gone unnoticed. This scholarship will allow me to continue putting those long hours into trying to understand the ever-increasing difficulty of engineering problems and their application.
“I just want to say thank you so much to the alumni and friends who made this amazing and generous award possible. I promise I will put this kind of donation to good use in the betterment of myself and my community.”

Joshua Hatch
Major: Electrical Engineering
Minor: Mathematics TE
Expected Graduation: Spring 2025
Hometown: Chanute, Kansas
I am Joshua Hatch, a US Navy veteran and electrical engineering major at Boise State. I am also pursuing teaching certifications in engineering and mathematics secondary education. After I graduate, I plan to go into power machinery, finding a job where I can use the skills I gain in school while hopefully avoiding the cubicle life. Eventually, by the time I retire, I would like to share my experience and knowledge with the younger generations as a high school teacher.
What does receiving this scholarship mean to you?
Currently, I am attending school mostly on the GI bill while my wife attends Medical School at ICOM in Meridian, ID. Together we can float by month to month on her loans and my GI bill housing allowance, but as rent prices in the area continue to rise, things are getting tighter and tighter. We have had to cut down on a lot of the things we enjoy, but with this scholarship, we will be given some breathing room, especially as we see the economy respond poorly to the current viral pandemic. This scholarship will provide us with some much-needed peace of mind knowing that, through the generous support of Boise State donors, we will be able to make it through our schooling.
“My wife and I would like to thank the donors from the bottom of our hearts. As for myself, a veteran adjusting to life after the military, and my wife a medical student living on loans and the GI bill, this scholarship has given us peace of mind as we work towards finishing school.”
