The Materials Teaching lab has a wide range of equipment that can be used for teaching, analytical, and research purposes. The searchable list below describes many of the tools utilized in the lab. Note – with the nature of a teaching lab, the list of tools available for use may vary at any time.

Mechanical Testing Equipment

Mechanical Test Frame

Model 5542. Desktop universal test machine equipped with 500 N and 10 N load cells and an assortment of grips and other fixtures for testing samples in tension, compression, bending, and more. Manufactured by Instron, ca 1998.

Mechanical Test Frame

Model 5984. Floor model universal test machine with a maximum capacity of 150 kN (33,000 lbf). Equipped with150 kN and 10 kN (2,200 lbf) load cells, one sensor input channel, a webcam video feed, and an assortment of grips and other fixtures for testing samples in tension, compression, bending, and more. Manufactured by Instron, 2021.

Mechanical Test Frame- Servohydraulic Test System

Model Bionix 370-02. Servohydraulic universal test machine suited to cyclic mechanical testing. Capable of several tests such as fatigue life studies, tension, bending, and compression tests, as well as durability and wear. Manufactured by MTS Systems Corporation, ca 2010.

Rockwell Hardness Testing

Model 900-331D. Used to test the hardness of metals using Rockwell A, B, C and other scales. Manufactured by Phase II, ca 2010.

Rockwell Hardness Testing

Model 900-365. Used to test the hardness of metals using Rockwell A, B, C and other scales. Manufactured by Phase II, ca 2012.

Durometer Hardness Tester

Models Type A 1600 and Type D 1600. Hardness testers for softer materials, soft rubbers (Shore A scale) and hard plastics (Shore D scale). With test fixture to insure repeatable measurements. Manufactured by Rex Gauge, ca 2008.

Model TechCut 4. A low speed diamond saw for cutting samples delicately. Manufactured by Allied High Tech Products Inc, 2010.

Sample Mounting, Epoxy

35 psi pressure pot for collapsing bubbles and voids during epoxy mount curing. Manufactured by Allied High Tech Products Inc, 2020.

Vacuum pot for deairing and bubble removal during epoxy mount curing. Manufactured 2020.

Polishing Wheel, LabPol-1 (X4)

Model 5200-119. Grind and/or polish samples at varying speeds. Manufactured by Struers, ca 2010.

Optical Microscopy Equipment

Microscope, Stereozoom (X2)

Stereozoom microscope with magnification range of 5X to 120X. Mounted on a boom stand to inspect almost any sample type, and equipped with a digital camera and quad segmented LED ringlight. Manufactured in 2020.

Microscope, Inverted Metallographic (X4)

Model MCX 1700. Inverted optical microscope with 5MP digital camera, with 5X to 40X objectives and polarized illumination. Manufactured by Austria Micros, 2008.

Model Axiovert 200 MAT w/AxioCam MRc5. Manufactured by Zeiss.

Scanning Electron Microscopy Equipment

Model SU3500. Manufactured by Hitachi.

Microscope, Benchtop SEM

Model JCM-5000 NeoScope. Benchtop SEM that is simple to operate with up to 15,000 x magnification. Can be operated by users with any skill level. Limited to small samples. Manufactured by JEOL, 2008.

Furnace, 1150C Box

Box Furnace with air atmosphere. Maximum temperature 1,150C. Single ramp to setpoint temperature controller. Manufactured by Thermolyne.

Furnace, 1250C Box

Model PMT10-12. Box Furnace with air or flowing inert gas atmosphere. Maximum temperature 1,250C. Programmable temperature controller. Manufactured by Paragon, 2021.

Furnace, 1500C Box

Box Furnace with air atmosphere. Maximum temperature 1,500C. Programmable temperature controller. Manufactured by Lindberg/Blue M, ca 2005.

Furnace, 1200C Tube

Tube Furnace, for 50 mm ID quartz or alumina tube. Capable of air, flowing inert gas, or low vacuum atmosphere. Maximum temperature 1,250C. Programmable temperature controller. Manufactured by MTI, ca 2010.

Oven, 300C Convection

Convection oven with programmable temperature, fan, and vent control. Maximum temperature 300C. Manufactured by Binder, 2020.
