The following graduating students have been recognized by the faculty and staff of the Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering program for their excellent work.
Outstanding Graduating Mechanical Engineer
Marta Hermida Herraez
I am from Madrid Spain. I graduated from High School with an Honorific Mention and I came to Boise State four and a half years ago. I came to Boise State to play basketball for the WBB and to study mechanical engineering (one of the best programs). In the future, I would like to play basketball professionally and I would also like to work in the biomedical field, specifically with prostheses.
My senior Design Project was the biggest challenges but also one of the best experiences here. I had the opportunity to work with three great teammates to help amputees being more independent by creating a device that takes care of donning and doffing of the liner. This is a silicone gel sock that is going to be placed on the leg and will be connected by a pin to the prosthesis.
Leadership Award
Tessa Mei-lin Smith Fong
It is amazing to see how much I have transformed in the past four and a half years. When I entered Boise State University, I had no clue what I wanted to do, or what I wanted to major in. Around two years into my undergraduate career, I decided on mechanical engineering and have never looked back. Engineering has given me many leadership opportunities I would have not found elsewhere. I joined Phi Sigma Rho, the sorority for women in engineering, where I had the opportunity to be president for two consecutive years. I have also been treasurer for Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honors society, since being inducted my junior year. Holding these and other leadership positions has allowed me to see different perspectives while
contributing to helping build our own campus communities. I am excited to bring what I have learned and experienced into my graduate studies and one day into the working world, as I hope to one day take on a manager role.
I want to thank everyone- my family, friends, professors, peers, and coworkers for encouraging and challenging me along my journey at Boise State. So, thank you!

After transferring to Boise State University, the Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering department provided me with numerous opportunities to get involved. I was a team lead for the NASA Microgravity Undergraduate Research Team, a student lab technician in the Idaho Microfabrication Laboratory, a Peer Educator, and a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. Each of these opportunities allowed me to collaborate with students and faculty, all of which helped me to grow both as a learner and a leader. The entire MBE department is filled with passionate, hardworking individuals who have helped to make my experience at Boise State a great one. After graduation, I will be working at Clenera Renewable Energy as a Performance Engineer.
Tais Mitchell
Growing up in a family of proud Bronco alumni, I entered Boise State in the fall of 2015. I majored in mechanical engineering and was involved in several clubs and organizations on campus. I became a member of Students Opportunity for Airborne Research, Tau Beta Pi, and played in The Blue Thunder Marching Band as a clarinetist. I was also a member of the Industrial Assessment Center (IAC), which performs energy audits for manufacturing facilities. Working with the IAC sparked an interest in the energy sector and inspired me to continue my education by pursuing a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering working under Dr. John Gardner. I have learned and succeeded because of my professors, various project mentors, and my fellow students. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, skiing, hiking and being outdoors.
