U of U recruiting for Materials Science graduate students at virtual event

Dear Student,

As Chair of the Department of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE), I would like to personally welcome you to join our virtual graduate student recruiting event on February 17th starting at 9 AM U.S. mountain standard time. The Utah MSE department has grown tremendously in the last couple of years, largely due to a merger of two previous departments: Materials Science & Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering. We now have 20 tenured/tenure track faculty with appointments in our department in addition to five adjunct/research faculty who teach courses. We offer M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in both Materials Science & Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering. Full-time graduate research assistantships are awarded to almost all of our traditional graduate students with stipends of $24,000/year or more with tuition paid.

Our faculty-driven research covers a wide range of materials and materials-related topics—including physical metallurgy, extractive metallurgy, ceramics, polymers, nuclear materials, machine learning based materials discovery, semiconductors, nanomaterials, magnetic materials, quantum materials, mineral processing, molten salts, glass, inorganic crystalline materials, energy storage materials, and more. We work on applications including solar energy, batteries, nuclear fuels and waste forms, materials for extreme environments, environmentally benign materials, materials for healthcare, steel, copper, and titanium production, electronics and computing materials, and more.

We are currently in the process of recruiting about 15 new graduate students to join our department and work directly with faculty on research projects. At the February 17th event, we will have a really informative program that includes:

      • Welcome from the Department Chair
      • Welcome from the Deans of the College of Engineering and Mines and Earth Sciences
      • Welcome from our department directors of graduate studies
      • Short research overviews by several of our faculty
      • Panel session led by current graduate students
      • Virtual laboratory tour (pre-recorded video)

All of the program except for the virtual lab tour will be interactive, so you are encouraged to ask questions.

Later in the day, you will have the opportunity to join breakout sessions with several of our faculty to talk in more detail about their research and openings in their research groups.

I also want to ask you to take a look at the attached brochure on life in Utah. We are proud of the great quality of life offered by Utah and the Salt Lake City area. We hope you will join us for our virtual recruiting event this February 17th. We are still taking and reviewing applications for graduate study beginning Fall 2021. Domestic (U.S.) students can request waivers that make the application free.
