Nuha Akhtar – Third Year

Meet Nuha
EIS Student Shop Supervisor, Microgravity Team Lead, Ceramic Microelectrical Mechanical Systems (C-MEMS) Lab, Collaboratory of Epitaxy for Nanomaterials (CEN), Principal Alto Saxophone in BSU Symphonic Winds, BSU Tennis Club, Honors College

What I want to contribute
Being on the SAB, I would be able to highlight the perspectives and opinions of underrepresented students in the department. Working in the EIS and in several labs, I am exposed to the needs of our student population when it comes to funding, upper-division elective classes/curriculum, and potential opportunities for students. The SAB would allow me to express these needs and any other concerns or criticisms students may have to create positive change in our department.

Phoebe Cain

Phoebe Cain
Phoebe Cain – Fourth Year

Meet Phoebe
Academic related Involvement: Undergraduate Researcher in the BABI lab, Engineering Intern at WSDOT, Engineering intern at RH2 Engineering, Society of Women Engineers, Tau Beta Pi member, Engineering and innovation residential college, Previous ME Club treasurer and ASBSU Freshman representative

Personal Extracurriculars: Skiing, Hiking, Reading, Biking, Travelling

What I want to contribute
I would love to serve on the MBE SAB to utilize my numerous connections and friendships with Engineering Peers, and my connections with Faculty, in hopes of bridging the two groups closer together. Strong communication skills have allowed my engineering network to flourish, so I know I could be a voice for classmates and their needs, as well as my own. Additionally, having attended careers fairs every semester and acquiring two internships, I feel I could speak on the current industry and how to better prepare students in our department. Lastly, my college experience thus far has frequently been faced with challenges and self doubt. I would love to foster an environment for every student to feel a sense of belonging as a member of this department, and share ideas on how to support individuals as humans with fluctuating lives, not just as engineering students.

Devon Crump

Devon Crump
Devon Crump – Fourth Year

Meet Devon
I am a Junior, going to be Senior Mechanical Engineering Major. Along with the curriculum, I wanted to be as involved as i could in my time at BSU. This has led to me being the head lab assistant at the Idaho Microfabrication Lab on campus, where I assist in student’s research projects and maintaining the machinery inside. I am also in ASBSU as the Senator for the College of Engineering, which has allowed me to connect with many COEN students and learn the successes, as well as the shortcomings of the program. I also have been able to meet with many professors, deans, and directors in this time from these experiences. Outside of school, I am an avid snowboarder, and spend lots of my time reading, hiking, and fishing.

What I want to contribute
I would like to increase the amount of upper division electives available to ME majors, allowing a more focused curriculum for certain industries such as microfabrication or automotive. I would also like to increase the opportunity for hands on experiences that students get in the machine shop to help bridge the gap between engineer and machinist, as this is one of the things that many students have voiced that they want. To do this, additional funding will be needed, so raising funds for the machine shop is a priority. Finally, I would like to implement a FE Exam Prep program for COEN. Many students are unsure of the requirements, exam content, or even that the exam exists. Preparing them, if they would like, would be a great assistance for many students who plan on becoming professional engineers.

Ian Jensen

Ian Jensen
Ian Jensen- Fourth Year

Meet Ian
Engineering Innovation Studio Supervisor, Engineering Research Support Undergraduate Employee, Autonomous Robotics, Baja Racing Club, Fabrication, Snowboarding/Dirt Biking/Off Roading enthusiast and Veteran

What I want to contribute
I would like to be involved in the student advisory board because I believe I could provide a student’s point of view on the current curriculum and course subjects due to being in my senior year of mechanical engineering degree here at Boise State. Additionally I work as a Engineering Innovation Studio Supervisor, this position has allowed me to work with a large number of students in the Boise State mechanical engineering program closely through training them on tool usage and assisting in students projects. I feel that this opportunity has given me insight to many students’ opinions and experiences which could be utilized by the advisory board to help make improvements to the program and open further opportunities for future Boise State engineers. Also due to the experience and personal benefit I have received from being heavily involved in the Engineering Innovation Studio and Engineering Research Support I would like to see continued expansion of those opportunities for Boise State engineering students. I have also had the benefit of a variety of work experience as a non-traditional student. I think that this perspective helps me recognize potential subjects/experiences that I think should be expanded on and made available to engineering students to become more hirable and make a more seamless transition to industry after graduation.

Jessica Lambert

Jessica Lambert – Fourth Year

Meet Jessica
Engineering Innovation Studio, New Product Development Lab, FIRST Robotics, Society of Women Engineers

What I want to contribute
I’ve enjoyed a lot of the curriculum changes that have happened during my time here at the College of Engineering, but not all of them. In working at the Engineering Innovation Studio, I’ve had the opportunity to talk to a lot of students from different points in the program. These students want to see changes from the MBE department in terms of classes, certifications, and electives. Additionally, in my time working at the New Product Development Lab, I’ve been able to learn a lot about what companies look for in prospective hires and what soft and hard skills are applicable in the product design world. Given this background, I would come to the advisory board looking to further promote the utilization of the Engineering Innovation Studio and the addition of more robust design classes.

Colt Seiler

Colt Seiler
Colt Seiler – Fourth Year

Meet Colt
I’m currently a 3rd year mechanical engineering student at BSU. Working towards an Applied Mathematics Minor as well. I’ve participated in the Blue thunder marching band all of my years here.

What I want to contribute
I would like to serve on the Student Advisory Board as I feel like I have a good idea of how the program works at this point and could offer valuable feedback on how to improve the curriculum and support for students (such as help session availability for all students). I have also done extracurricular activities such as marching band while at BSU and I know how it is trying to manage time for classes, work, and other activities.

Jacob West

Jacob West
Jacob West – Third Year

Meet Jake
This is my first full-time semester at BSU. I transferred from CWI to complete a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. So far, I really like it here and would love to be more involved with the school. I just began working at the vacuum electronics lab here at Boise State. I am also a member of the CAES consortium.

I enjoy my classes here and am looking forward to starting my junior year. Outside of school I love to ski, ride bikes, and work on cars. I also enjoy playing music with my band. I primarily play the bass guitar.

What I want to contribute
As a non-traditional college student, it is important to me that transferring into the program is seamless and easy. I believe Boise State should work closely with CWI and CSI to ensure incoming students are prepared. I would work to improve this process for incoming students.

Lower Division Nominees

Jon Catlin

Jon Catlin
Jon Catlin – Second Year

Meet Jon
Involvement: Engineering and Innovation Community

What I want to contribute
Influencing decisions in a positive direction is something I’ve always felt drawn toward. Whether it comes as advice to a friend or an informative perspective that may be overlooked, improvement and positive influence has been and will remain a priority for me. Being a part of the student advisory board will help me represent my peers with equity and provide perspective to those that may be frustrated with unfortunate circumstances. Learning how administrative decisions are made and being able to influence them would allow me to align my values and aptitudes with concrete change.

Emma Hill

Emma Hill
Emma Hill – First Year

Meet Emma
Living Learning Program (Engineering and Innovation Community), Cellist, Pottery, Woodworking, Skiing, Open Water Scuba Certified.

What I want to contribute
I would like to be a part of the Student Advisory Board to help the students have a voice about where they want their money to go. I want to be able to provide a way for all students to be able to gain access to the change they want to see on campus, and be able to advocate for what should be done for the students. Whether that be helping provide more learning opportunities or helping the students have access to the materials they need. I want to be able to be someone that the students can approach with their ideas.

Genevieve (Gen) Overmyer

Genevieve Overmyer
Genevieve Overmyer – Second Year

Meet Gen
Double Major in Material Science engineering as well as Mechanical engineering, Microgravity VIP as the outreach coordinator, Energy and leadership VIP (A new VIP we just started up working with the INL), Part of the Engineering and Innovation living and learning community my freshman year, Writing center consultant (at the Boise State Writing Center), A trombonist (as a part of Boise State’s Trombone choir), and part of the Jedi Academy at Boise State

What I want to contribute
As you can see I am a very well-rounded person! As someone who has wanted to be an engineer since I was young, I want to continue to be able to give that opportunity to anyone who also wants to be an engineer regardless of gender, race or background. We are also the future, and as such, we should strive to not only be the best we can be, but also strive to inspire the engineers that will follow in our footsteps. All the work I have done, being Microgravity’s outreach coordinator, going out and representing NASA has proven to me how much we can do to set a good example for the next generation! One of the major things that brought me to Boise State all the way from Chicago Illinois is because of how collaborative our engineering department is. In all of my classes, my professors have stressed how important it is to collaborate with one another as it helps us better prepare ourselves for the engineering jobs we will take on after college. I will continue to have that be a main focus embedded in the curriculum, as it is what sets our program so far ahead of other universities’ engineering programs. I want to be a voice that makes a difference in any way I can and would be honored to represent the Mechanical engineering student body!

Ian Peña

Ian Peña
Ian Peña – Second Year

Meet Ian
I am a member of the Microgravity Research Team. I am also working as a lab technician in the Thermal Fluids Lab, as well as the Student Assistant for the Idaho Science & Aerospace Scholars (ISAS) Program for Concurrent Enrollment and SDE. I like to attend the first Friday astronomy lectures, and am pursuing an internship at NASA this Summer.

What I want to contribute
I want to be able to help my department by providing valuable and thoughtful feedback on program-related topics. The program cannot be led by only one perspective, and I think serving on the SAB is a way for me to do my part in helping make MBE as successful as possible going into thr future. I feel like my experience with hands-on research, design, and troubleshooting as well as my experience with managing STEM curriculum from behind the scenes with ISAS affords me a unique ability to provide feedback which already accounts for administrative and academic context.

Dani Rojas

Dani Rojas
Dani Rojas – Second Year

Meet Dani
Organización de Estudiantes Latino-Americanos, Undergraduate Research Assistant in the Computational Materials Engineering Laboratory, Resident Assistant, TRIO Stem Scholar

What I want to contribute
I would like to contribute by offering perspective on the many resources on campus that are available to students who may struggle to make ends meet, especially for those that are studying engineering. I feel that I could make a difference by helping students find ways of making school work for them alongside the other responsibilities they may have, which I have experience with by working as a resident assistant as well as being a TRIO Stem Scholar. I would also like to make a difference by helping students have more access to tutoring resources (more drop in tutoring for classes such as statics, dynamics, etc.)

Lucas Sasso

Lucas Sasso
Lucas Sasso – Second Year

Meet Lucas
I am going into my third semester here at Boise State and I am looking for more ways to connect with the school and other students while I am here. I am in the honors college and take my academic focus seriously but I am expanding my interests. I have interests in aerospace engineering and mechanical engineering. With these interests I am looking to join the microgravity or other engineering VIP projects. I am also just beginning the core ME classes but I have a lot of AP physics experience from high school and I am genuinely looking forward to the engineering courses here at BSU. I have a part time job where I do calibration for hospital sensors to monitor vaccines and other supply for both here, in Boise, and for across the U.S. I love competing in soccer, rock climbing, and other sports outside of school but most importantly looking to take a leadership role here in Boise.

What I want to contribute
I want to promote having more COEN events for students of all division levels. I want to also contribute input from those who are like me and just beginning the program and want to have more connections with the department.
