What’s the Difference Between EE and CSE Degrees?

Today’s electrical and computer engineers have a powerful role in creating social good, delivering innovations for a better future. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) offers two bachelor’s degrees: Electrical Engineering and Computer Systems Engineering. We also offer certificates in biomedical instrumentation and the security of cyber-physical systems. Non-majors can earn a minor in Electrical Engineering.  Below a few of the key differences between the two bachelor of science degree options.

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

Electrical engineers work on projects in a broad range of fields, from designing nanoscale biomedical devices and autonomous vehicles to creating large-scale power grids and satellite communications systems, developing the communication technology needed for 5G cell phone service, to the circuits allowing your cellphone to run your favorite applications.

Bachelor of Science in Computer Systems Engineering

The Computer Systems Engineering degree provides students with (i) a broad foundation in how to design systems with computers like IoT, (ii) an in-depth understanding of security principles in designing systems for cyber applications, and (iii) an in-depth understanding of cyber-physical systems. It will give graduates the ability to operate in both the computer science and electrical engineering worlds. The degree provides the electrical engineering background/principles for overall systems design, with the ability to use programming to automate and to understand how cyber hacking can impact the daily function of the systems. The quantitative, problem-solving skill set that comes with a systems engineering background will also provide a unique perspective and competitive edge for students seeking advanced degrees or industry certifications within their professional field of interest.

Flexible Options

The ECE Department is committed to providing students the flexibility to explore the sub-domain areas and minors that fit their interests through our options for elective courses. Our undergraduate curriculum emphasizes hands-on experience through coordinated laboratory classes, and every student has the opportunity to earn credit for an internship or undergraduate research experience. Students leave our programs ready to innovate, problem-solve, and achieve.
