Boise State University Computer Science welcomes Dr. Jerry Fails as new Department Chair and Dr. Jianshu Liu and Dr. Huadi Zhu as new Assistant Professors in Fall 2024.
Department Chair and Professor Jerry Fails
Dr. Fails brings passionate leadership experience in supporting students to the role of Department Chair, having served as Graduate Coordinator and Computer Science 121 Course Coordinator for the last six years and as the College of Engineering Dean Fellow for Graduate Academic Affairs for the last year. In assuming this new role Dr. Fails stated: “I’m focused on bringing people together by focusing on two main goals: cultivating a community and culture of innovation and collaboration, and building strong bridges that grow our community and further enable us to make an impact in the world around us.”
Dr. Fails received his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Maryland and a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Computer Science at Brigham Young University. He joined Boise State University as an Associate Professor in 2016. His general area of research is Human-Computer Interaction, with a focus on designing technology with and for children. His current projects focus on seeking to support children as they search for information online, understanding privacy and fear within family contexts, supporting children’s privacy and security needs online, and expanding methods of designing technologies with and for children to online, hybrid, and in-person modalities at the local and global scale.
Assistant Professor Jianshu Liu
Dr. Jianshu Liu joins Boise State as an Assistant Professor after receiving his PhD in Computer Science from Louisiana State University-Baton Rouge. His research interests lie in performance and scalability analysis of various cloud systems, with the aim of achieving good performance and high resource efficiency for evolving systems in cloud environments. His research relies on timeline analysis to investigate various factors that cause the performance variations of cloud systems.
Assistant Professor Huadi Zhu
Dr. Huadi Zhu joins Boise State as an Assistant Professor after receiving his PhD in Computer Science from University of Texas at Arlington and a MS in Computer Engineering from the University of Florida. His research fields include cybersecurity, immersive technology, human-centered computing, and multimedia, with a special emphasis on their novel applications in emerging systems.
