The Construction Management Department encourages all CM students to participate in an internship to provide them with real-life work experiences related to construction. On average, our CM students complete at least two summer internships during their time at Boise State; many will do three internships, one each summer. An internship is integral to a student’s academic experience, allowing them to apply knowledge learned in the classroom, continue their education outside the university, explore career interests, and begin networking within the industry.
Students may count one summer internship towards three(3) credits of their CM Bachelors Degree. The CM department has an internship policy to ensure that internships worth credit have the same caliber of experience. Below is a list of requirements for the internship, including the course Prerequisites to enroll in the CMGT 493 Summer Internship. Please review the policy; any additional questions should be directed to the CM Internship Coordinator.

Construction Management Internship Coordinator
Individuals Involved in the Internship
â–ª Student: CM internships originate with the student, and are guided and developed with their academic advisor, CM internship coordinator and supervisor at proposed entity.
â–ª Faculty / Internship Coordinator: The Internship Coordinator will approve internship applications,
pair the student with a faculty member to develop internship learning outcomes and parameters of internship, check in with student’s internship supervisor (as needed), grade internship deliverables, and award credit.
â–ª Supervisor (employer): The Supervisor will oversee the day-to-day activities, tasks given and
provide a formal evaluation of the students’ performance at the completion of the internship. Policies
- An internship is a supervised experience directly related to the construction management discipline.Â
- CM internships are geared towards construction management and manual construction labor should not be a significant part of the internship for the student to receive credit. 3. An internship must be completed in the semester the student is getting academic credit, per the Registrar’s academic calendars.Â
- Students are eligible for CM internships for credit if they are a declared Construction Management or Civil Engineering major.Â
- Students are eligible for CMGT 493 when they have completed at least 57 credits of coursework including CMGT 201 & CMGT 245 prior to starting their internship. The CM dept does not offer a lower-division (293) level internship.Â
- The CM department encourages students to participate in summer internships to fully engage in the internship and get the most of the experience.
- Internships during Fall and Spring semester for full-time students are highly discouraged. Students enrolled in 10 or more credits of coursework wishing to also enroll in an internship during the Fall or Spring semester will be required to provide reasonable justification and a plan for how to ensure that their coursework does not suffer. Non-summer internships will be addressed on a case-by-case basis in consultation with the student, academic advisor, and the Internship Coordinator.Â
- Internships are graded on a letter grade basis.Â
- CM interns will submit the following deliverables: (1) Learning Objectives (2) weekly reports, (3) Summary Internship Experience Report, and (4) supervisor evaluation for consideration of academic credit. Each of these deliverables and their respective deadlines will be more fully defined in the course syllabus. Students who fail to submit the required deliverables in a timely fashion may earn an F grade in the internship.Â
- The CMGT 493 Internship Class does count towards the upper-level construction management elective requirement for graduation.Â
- Students may only count three (3) credits of CMGT 493 towards their upper-level construction management elective requirement for graduation. Any remaining construction management elective credits required for the degree must be coursework.Â
- BSU internship policy requires 45 hours of work for each hour of academic credit awarded. For example, students must work 135 hours during a regular semester to satisfy a three-credit internship. However, the CMGT 493 Internship course must meet additional requirements. For full-time employment (defined as 40+ hours per week), CMGT 493 requires a minimum of 6 weeks. For part-time employment (defined as less than 40 hours per week), CMGT 493 requires a minimum of 12 weeks.Â
- Internship credit is considered academic credit and will be billed by the university during the semester of the internship.Â
- Registration for internship credit is a multi-stage process, much different than registering for a class. Please meet with the CM Internship Coordinator prior to beginning the process.
