AML graduate student Timothy Phero, along with graduate student Scott Birks and professor Will Hughes, were recently highlighted for their inventive approach to remotely teaching MSE 245L: Intro to Materials Science and Engineering Lab during Covid-19 classroom closures. While many labs pivoted to focus on data analysis, Tim, Scott and Dr. Hughes redesigned the entire lab coursework, then assembled and mailed each student a kit of experiments. The kits provided 80% of materials needed while incorporating household items such as salt, pans or ovens, so that the students could still experience hands-on learning without being on campus.
