[Jacob]

Hello, this is a video tour of the Micron Business and Economics Building, M-B-E-B or MBEB for short. It’s the home of the College of Business and Economics, COBE for short. It’s here in Boise, Idaho,at Boise State University.

[MUSIC]

My name is Jacob, I’m a student here at the Boise State University College of Business and Economics, and this is our gorgeous building. This is the Jackson Commons, a place where students can hang out, study, and have lunch. This is our café, a place for students can buy sandwiches, coffees, and the best cinnamon rolls.

Down the hall, my friend will talk to you about the COBE advising services.

[Sydney]

As a new student with the College of Business and Economics, one of the first few places you’re going to be visiting is Advising Services. When I first moved here from Anchorage, Alaska — I’m Sydney, by the way — I was able to meet with an academic advisor and all the stresses I had about being in a new place just melted away. It’s such an advantage to have academic advisors here within the building, and they will help you create a strategic academic plan and guide you all the way through graduation. The staff here is wonderful and fabulous, and there’s not only positive energy within the room, but throughout the entire building as well.

[Jacob]

I couldn’t agree more. There’s just something about being here that makes me feel like I’m headed in the right direction. This is a touchscreen digital display. There are four on the first floor and one on every other floor. This is our building map. The north wing towards the river and downtown, the central corridor and the south wing towards the Boise Depot and University Drive.

Next to the cafe is COBE Career Services. They give business focused, student centered career advice. The career coaching staff will help you one-on-one to prepare your resume, practice interviews, find internships or jobs, and network with business professionals. COBE is the only college at Boise State and the only business school in Idaho to have embedded career services. Inside COBE Career Services is a Career Closet with professional attire for students to have for interviews, career fairs, conferences, presentations and such. Students can try on clothes and keep what they like for free. Next to Career Services is the Tutoring Lab. It has 18 computer workstations, table seating, and plenty of whiteboards. Graduate assistants staff the lab giving free help in several business subjects. Another great resource is the Thompson Family Writing Lab. You can drop in or make an appointment to get help from professionally trained writing consultants. This is where you learn to write in a clear, concise, and compelling manner.

[Eric]

Hey, I’m Eric. I’m out here in the plaza so you can get a better layout of the building. Over here we have the north wing, and over here we have the south wing. That’s where the majority of the classrooms and the team rooms are. In the center are some of the places that you’ve already seen, including Career and Advising Services, plus the writing center. All that in, you can tell the first floor is really all about students.

There are 16 classrooms throughout the building. A couple classrooms are traditional or flat style, with movable tables and chairs. And the rest are horseshoe or case style rooms, with tiered seating. All classrooms have dual screens, projectors, whiteboards, and comfy chairs.

The team rooms are a really cool thing here at MBEB. There are 24 of them throughout the building for students and teams to use. They accommodate four to six students and can be reserved in advance or on the spot. They have a write-on wall, flat screen monitor, and are great for teams.

What a great building, student-centered, tons of windows, and plenty of places to hang out and study, like in this plaza. While you’re looking at photos of students enjoying the building, I’m going to tell you a little bit about the COBE Living Learning Community.

If you’re a hardworking, motivated student who wants to make the most out of your college experience, I highly recommend you spend your first year in the COBE Living Learning Community. Living learning environments are proven to increase success in college and future endeavors. You will be part of a supportive and tight-knit group of business students. You’ll make lifelong friendships and enjoy recreational activities like white water rafting, skiing, and hiking. In the COBE Living Learning Community, you’re going to be part of a supportive, tight-knit group of business students. Meet a member of the class and say “Hi!”

[Mikayla]

Hi, I’m Mikayla, a COBE Living Learning Community resident. Some of my favorite things about the COBE LLC are the friendships that I’ve made and the opportunities that we get like going to visit companies. Let’s say hello to the whole class.

[Jaden]

Being a part of an LLC is great. Make sure you apply yearly since space is limited.

[Mikayla]

Hi, me again. I’m standing outside the Skaggs Hall of Learning located at the end of the south wing of the building. This sign here is made of sandstone from Table Rock Quarry just east of here. There are about 400 tons of sandstone in our building. I’m not joking. (Mikayla snaps her fingers)

[Mikayla]

Now we’re in the lobby of Skaggs Hall. We are right here (she indicates the location on the digital display map) in this annex-sort-of thingy. This 250-seat auditorium is home to classes, the Entrepreneur Connect Speaker Series, and other special events. This room has high-quality finishing for room aesthetics and great acoustics. One of your first classes in Skaggs Hall may be Business 101, Business for the New Generation. I’m a first-year and I loved this class. Class content has an emphasis on strategy, teamwork, communication, problem solving, and professional business etiquette. My classmates and I loved the vibe in this exciting class, where up-to-date lecturers go inside with the week’s headline news. Good class. Let’s go upstairs. You can take the elevator if you want.

[MUSIC]

Now we’re on the second floor above the Skaggs Hall Learning auditorium. This is the Imagination Lab. It’s a great place to work on problem solving and team building exercises. Tables and chairs on wheels make it easy to configure the room in many ways to accommodate classes, design thinking projects, panel events, receptions, and we hold the COBE Outstanding Graduates luncheon in here. Next to the Imagination Lab is a small classroom, desks with computers for students’ use, and there’s even a sneaky spot to study with a nice view out away from crowds. Oh, and the elevator. Next up, students will show you the rest of the second floor.

[Nicole and Macy]

Hey, guys.

[Nicole]

My name is Nicole and I’m from Lafayette, California,

[Macy]

and I’m Macy from Meridian, Idaho.

[MACY]

Right now, we are on the second floor of the building, overlooking the Jackson Commons towards Capitol Boulevard. This is the Info Commons. It has cozy spots to sit and computers and a printer for students to use. Also in this center section is the Dykman Financial Trading Room and next to it, a horseshoe-style classroom with computers at each seat for students to use.

[Nicole]

The north and south wing on the second and third floor of this building houses five academic departments. Marketing is located on the north wing on the second floor.

[Macy]

On the south wing of the building, towards University Drive and the Boise Depot, we have the Department of Management. Now let’s head back to the Dykman Financial Trading Room and learn more about it.

[Jailyn]

Hi, my name is Jailyn and this cool room behind me is the Dykman Financial Trading Room. It has a wealth of technological tools and provides hands-on experience in a variety of financial management applications. The licensed Bloomberg terminals provide the same cutting-edge data, research, and analytics that industry professionals use. The students in class right now are using real money to learn how to manage a portfolio of stocks and exchange-traded funds.

Money earned is then used to fund scholarships and the software for future finance students. With the licensed Bloomberg terminals streaming the latest market activity, students gain an understanding of market dynamics in real time.

[Brando] (at a vending machine)

Oh hey, never underestimate the power of a good snack. I’m Brando Garcia and I’m an accounting student here. We’re currently on the third floor in the south wing of the building. Here you can find the Office of the Dean and COBE Administration. The administration staff are friendly, helpful, and they keep the college running smoothly. They also organize events like the COBE Cookout and look out for our best interest.

Across the hall here, we have the Department of Accountancy and the Department of Finance. Down the hall, team rooms and classrooms line the central corridor. It’s a fun school and all the academic programs in the College of Business and Economics are accredited by AACSB International, which for us students means better programs and faculty, more recruiters, and higher salaries.

And now we’re in the Department of Economics. Just like any other department, we have administration in the center and faculty offices that line both sides of the hallways. Right over here, we have some econ graduates that have been named Boise State’s Top 10 Scholars, including two that have been nationally recognized as Truman Scholars, which is a really big deal.

Across the hall here, we have the Department of Supply Chain Management and Information Technology, where graduates from these programs are in high demand. Altogether, COBE is a beautiful college with an excellent facility and top-notch instructors that are ready to take you under their wing. So why not come here and study with us? We’ll make you feel like family. Want a bite?

[Sydney B.]

Hello, my name is Sydney, and I’m an MBA student here at COBE. We’re on the fourth floor. Sorry, I don’t have any snacks. The Executive Education Classroom is just behind me, and the MBA program staff offices are just here. It’s great to learn in such a nice environment, one that inspires me to be the best I can be. We’re now in the center corridor of the fourth floor. There are two additional big, beautiful classrooms, and team rooms line the opposite side of the hall.

I’d also like to tell you about some of the green features of our building. See at the end of the south wing on the roof of the Skaggs Hall of Learning are solar panels. Since the panels’ installation in 2015, we have created energy to effectively offset CO2 emissions by the equivalent of planting more than 1,400 trees every year. Other green features are automated energy reduction when rooms are unoccupied, using water that’s naturally hot right out of the ground for heat and snow melt, and high-tech window glazing that reduces the amount of heat lost in the winter and blocks up to 90% of the heat from entering the building in the summer. In the north wing, we have the Williams Executive Boardroom. It’s a fantastic space for meetings and events both inside and out on the terrace. On the outdoor terrace, you can see views into beautiful downtown Boise and Idaho’s majestic mountains, and campus spreads out to the east. And yet another green feature, a living roof. The roofs of both wings are covered with hardy native plants that reduce the amount of energy needed for heating and cooling, and the plants help to mitigate storm runoff. They require very little water and hardly any maintenance. This building was designed with an energy use standard nearly 50% better than the building requirements at the time of construction. With many green and efficient features, the Micron Business and Economics building is a model of environmental stewardship and sustainability.

[Jacob]

Thank you for watching our video tour of the Micron Business and Economics building. This has been my home for the past four years, and I’ve really enjoyed my time here. I hope you will too.

Thank you.
