It was a crisp winter afternoon, and national cybersecurity expert, Jordan Elbaum, gave an energetic, fast-paced presentation about developments in IT security trends. Students, faculty and community members were engaged by the very knowledgeable and passionate Elbaum, who used his experiences to inform the audience how cyber threats can impact any business that is not properly prepared. In very recent times, the paradigm has shifted from having rules, signatures, and human analysis to incorporating big data-driven security analytics and machine learning. This shift has led to more real-time control for companies trying to protect their own records and their customers’.
“I was impressed by Elbaum’s passion and thorough understanding of IT security concerns,” stated Kyle Luster, a Boise State University business student. “The entire presentation was very forward-looking, which seems to be important for any aspect of business, not just IT.”
The session wrapped up with a short question-and-answer session where members of the audience asked industry-specific questions that Elbaum was able to answer in detail. Elbaum ended the discussion noting that there is a high demand for a cybersecurity workforce and the supply is very low. This leaves a large opportunity for future, interested graduates to venture into this rapidly growing and changing industry.
Elbaum is vice president of architecture at Right! Systems Inc.
