Where did you grow up?
I grew up in several places. I was born in Utah, and my family later relocated to the Fort Lauderdale area in Florida, before finally settling in Yakima, Washington, where I lived until after my graduation.
What do you like to do for fun?
Wait, I am allowed to have fun while juggling work and school? I wish I had been told this sooner. In seriousness, I find joy in learning and view my school experience as fun, as unusual as that may sound. I cherish improving and bettering myself. Perhaps this should have been my answer to what makes me unique. Primarily, my idea of fun revolves around spending time with my wife, Ashley, and daughter, Harper. Additionally, I enjoy walking as much as I can which gives me the perfect opportunity to enjoy a multitude of audiobooks and podcasts.
What is something unique about you?
Over the past few years, while pursuing my Professional MBA at Boise State University, my life has undergone a comprehensive transformation that extends beyond academic and professional realms. On a personal front, a significant life event occurred shortly after my first summer class concluded—my wife and I were blessed to adopt the most beautiful and incredible baby girl. Additionally, during the program, I embarked on a health journey that led me to lose over 100 pounds by adopting healthier eating habits and incorporating walking into my routine.
What is your current professional role and place of employment?
Currently, my role is Senior Director of Data Operations at GS Strategy Group, a strategic consulting firm based in Boise, Idaho. We specialize in leveraging public opinion research to provide our clients with the necessary insights and solutions to achieve their objectives.
What does your job entail? What do you like most?
In my current role, I handle extensive data-related tasks. After a client approves a survey instrument and it’s ready for deployment, my responsibility is to create the deliverables. This means programming the tools so that, upon receiving the final data set, we can convert it into toplines, crosstab books, and conduct special analyses to dissect the results for our clients. Beyond these tasks, my role encompasses a broad range of other data science and analytical work. Such as extracting information—typically in data form—and transforming it into actionable insights. These insights are crucial for both internal decision-making and external communications, such as memos and presentations.
Why did you decide to pursue Boise State’s Professional MBA program?
I’m sure my decision to further my education was motivated by reasons similar to many others: a desire to improve myself and create more opportunities for the future. Believing that an MBA would perfectly complement my previous education by filling in any knowledge gaps, I chose this path. My choice of the Professional program was influenced by its recognition of the unique challenges and opportunities for working professionals. This program not only promised traditional learning but also offered the chance to connect and understand the workings of various positions and industries.
In your opinion, what has been the most impactful part about the Professional MBA program?
In my view, the most impactful aspect of the program is the ability to apply and discuss newly learned concepts directly in a professional work environment. This approach transforms lessons from purely theoretical to decidedly practical. Whether it’s integrating communication strategies into my daily interactions and emails, or engaging in more informed discussions with my boss about his various business ventures—even on topics as seemingly abstract as inventory management—the immediate application of these lessons significantly enhances my understanding. Being able to put theory into practice in real time has deepened my comprehension of the complex world we navigate.
Tell us about how you balance work, life and school. What are your tips for success?
A mentor described life as consisting of various ‘buckets’—such as work, personal life, family, and school. He emphasized that success doesn’t come from allocating equal time to each, but from nurturing every aspect, ensuring none are neglected or overdrawn. For me, achieving this balance hinges on strong organization and clear communication. Prioritizing deadlines is essential, enabling regular assessment and adjustment of my focus on necessary tasks. Effective communication ensures others are aware of my commitments, like class schedules or assignments, and helps me recognize if I’m close to depleting a bucket, prompting me to replenish it.
Since starting the Professional MBA, how has the program impacted your leadership abilities, work performance and / or career advancement?
This program has been a pivotal step in my professional development, profoundly influencing my leadership abilities, enhancing my work performance, and paving the way for career advancement. From the outset, it has significantly boosted my confidence and efficiency. Perhaps most crucially, it has provided me with a clearer understanding of the broader objectives and vision of our organization, as well as those of the organizations we serve. The program has been pivotal for my career, broadening opportunities, enhancing my job responsibilities, and opening doors to diverse special projects—achievements made possible by the skills and knowledge gained in recent years.
What is your post-MBA plan (personally or professionally)?
After graduation, I eagerly anticipate dedicating more time to my family, especially my wife and daughter. Despite taking a step back, my commitment to continuous learning and personal development will remain steadfast. Professionally, I find immense satisfaction in my current role, appreciating both the supportive work environment and the camaraderie among my colleagues. However, as I’ve pursued my MBA, new opportunities have emerged both within my organization and externally. I’m excited about the journey ahead and curious to see what the future holds.
