Getting Started

Employment Forms

At the beginning of your first semester of employment as a GA, you need to file an I-9. Ideally, this is done before the first day (August 12, 2024) of your contract but absolutely no later than Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

New Employees

  • REQUIRED for all new COBE GAs!

    • Bronco Card: In order to have access to the building this first week, you will need to get your Bronco CardI-9 Process

Federal law requires that new employees (including adjuncts and student workers) complete the I-9 process during the first three days of employment. (You are encouraged to complete this in the week priors if possible.)

o    New employees need to fill out some information and present acceptable documents.o    I-9s can be completed before the start date.o    Instructions on the I-9 webpage.Important! Employees who do not complete the I-9 process in a timely manner must be separated from employment until the process has been completed.

  • If you have a question about the I-9 process, please contact the HR front desk at (208) 426-1616 or email hrs@boisestate.edu.

Paychecks

There is a minimum 4-week delay from the start date of your contract and your first pay period. If the contract starts in the middle of a pay cycle, your first paycheck is delayed by 3 weeks. Paperwork completed later will result in an additional 2-week delay.

Your direct deposit can take up to a month to set up. Until the direct deposit is established you will need to pick up your check at the Payments and Disbursements office in the Administration Building, room 218.

Establish Communications

During your first week, introduce yourself to the office assistant and chairperson of the department to which you are assigned. It is critical to establish an effective method of communication between yourself and the office assistant and chairperson. Email can be helpful; however, the lack of real-time communication inherent in email communication can cause misunderstandings and other problems. To prevent difficulties, please check email regularly several times a day and respond in a timely manner.

The office assistant should give you general information as well as the specifics related to your work. Be aware, the office assistant in your department is your primary point of contact between assignments. Once the assignment has been established, you will be talking directly with the professor to coordinate your efforts. Again, it is wise to establish a work schedule with your department and inform the Business Graduate Studies Office. Keep in mind, you are here to assist the staff of your department, please make every effort to be helpful and require as little direct supervision as possible.

After this preliminary meeting, you will have basic instructions to begin your GA position. The majority of GAs are hired as research or teaching assistants. However, on occasion, you may be asked by your department to help cover the office in the admin’s absence. As with any professional position, you will want to familiarize yourself with the office policies and practices so you may be of assistance in this area when asked to fill in. However, covering the office or grading should not be your main assignment.

If you know you will be working with certain faculty members, it is a good idea to personally introduce yourself and to let them know you are available to assist them. During the course of your assignment, be sure to keep the faculty and office assistants with whom you are working abreast of any developments or questions that come up.

It is important that you clarify with the department or faculty member(s) you are assigned to of their specific needs, timelines, format, depth and expectations of your projects or position. Establishing and clarifying these expectations and continual follow up is important to develop the rapport necessary to the success of your assignment and continuation of your contract. Take the initiative to follow up regularly with your faculty and/or supervisor to ensure the quality of your work meets their expectations. This is very important as we ask for feedback at the end of each semester, and any student who does not meet a department’s expectations may be terminated or not rehired.
