[Title: Boise State University, Executive MBA Program, Participant Profile, R&D Manager – Consumer Products Company]
[R&D Manager, EMBA Participant] I left college with my undergraduate fully expecting to go back to school at some point
to further my education. Time marched on very quickly and I soon found myself with four children and a mortgage and a life that made it impossible to step away from that full time to go back to school. I looked at several online MBA programs but I have taken online courses before and I passed the classes but I didn’t retain much of what I studied. I didn’t want to put all of that time, effort and money into a program that would give me very little lasting benefit.

In my current job I have two co-workers who went through the Executive MBA Program at Boise State University before me, and I was able to see up close the professional and personal development they were making as they went through the program. And so I became very interested.

I attended an open house here on campus, got to meet some of the professors and the former students, got to see the beautiful facilities here. And I became really excited. I felt this was something I could do, something that would give me lasting benefit. So I sat down with my wife and our children and we put together a plan of how we could make this work. Life didn’t stop for two years I went through the program. We still had baseball games and recitals to go to and things, but with the plan we had in place I was able to do that as well as keep working at my job and do all of the things that were expected of me.

During our one week residency up in McCall at the very beginning of the program, I was blown away by the things that were being presented there. Some of it was things that I kind of had a hunch about, but seeing it presented in a very clear way it was easy to understand and apply was amazing. And so I came back from that program totally excited about the next two years. So I had high expectations of the program as I went into it, but the people that came in to teach us, to be with us and to give us their insights in business far surpassed my expectations.

We had business people from around the Boise valley, even beyond that, who come in here and want to share what they know. In addition, the cohort that I am apart of we have some really great people that have a lot of business experience. And sometimes the professor will ask a question, and the dialogue between the students is as valuable as what the professor brought to teach, and so that’s been pretty surprising.

I think the last two years have really prepared me for great success in the future, professionally and personally. You know the things that we learned, the tools we learned, the characteristics that we are trying to develop in this program, are applicable in all areas of your life, whether that’s professional or personal. I think I can say now at the end of the two year program, I am a better employee but I think, you might have to ask my wife and my children, but I think I am a better husband and father as well.
