Our accounting programs, along with all other degree programs offered within COBE, are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The AACSB is the premier organization monitoring institutions offering business education in the U.S. and abroad. Our association with this prestigious organization reflects a commitment by Boise State University, COBE, and the Department of Accountancy to pursue excellence and continuous improvement in our programs.
Approximately 160 students graduate each year with accounting degrees from Boise State. While some of our graduates pursue careers outside the Treasure Valley, the majority choose to live and work in the Boise area. One notable feature of Boise’s vibrant business community is the diversity of local employment options. Without leaving town, our graduates can find career opportunities with large national, regional, or local public accounting firms, corporations and businesses of varying size, and governmental entities, among others.
Our Department Statement
We provide a high-quality educational experience through student-centered teaching, impactful research, and meaningful service that benefits and challenges students, the accounting profession, the business community, and the community at large.
Consistent with COBE’s values we develop well-rounded professionals by:
- delivering rigorous and relevant curriculum
- engaging in relevant research and other scholarly endeavors
- encouraging life-long learning
- fostering a culture of service
- fostering a climate of mutual respect and ethical behavior.
Our City
Boise’s thriving business community provides numerous opportunities for accounting internships. The same companies that hire our graduates readily provide our current students with paid opportunities to gain valuable practical experience while they are still in school. Many of our students take advantage of these opportunities and put their classroom learning to work before completing their degrees.
Our Students
The Accountancy Department is home to the Zeta Psi chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the international honor organization for financial information students and professionals. Our student members are given many opportunities for personal development and public service. In addition to developing our students, Beta Alpha Psi’s programs provide them with opportunities to learn more about accounting careers and to network with professionals. Quite often, Boise State’s chapter is recognized by the national organization as a superior chapter. During 2015, Beta Alpha Psi received the Gold Challenge Award. Our chapter was one of only 11 chapters from across the country (out of approximately 320) to receive this honor. The award is designed to recognize those chapters that are truly exceptional.
Our Faculty
The primary focus of our faculty is delivering first-class instruction to our students. Supporting activities include research and scholarly activity and university and community service. The accounting programs are supported by thirteen full-time accounting faculty, nine of whom hold doctorates. Many of our full-time faculty are CPAs, and select members hold other professional credentials as well. Most faculty have extensive professional experience in areas including industrial, public, and governmental accounting.
