Video Transcript: Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences

[Maddi Trammel, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Television Arts] The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college on campus with the widest selection of majors ranging from theater to chemistry. There’s a lot going on. But how does that apply to you as a student? Let’s find out.

[Text on Screen] College of Arts and Sciences Games, Interactive Media and Mobile Technology

[Maddi] What are you working on?

[Konner Pierce, Bachelor of Science in Games, Interactive Media and Mobile Technology] Uh, so through GIM student developer team, I’m actually working on a VR simulation that uh is supposed to help teach kids the process of going from sand to an actual CPU chip.

[Maddi] That’s amazing. Um, GIM?

[Konner] Yeah, GIM or Games Interactive Media and Mobile Technology. It’s actually a four-year degree at Boise State.

[Maddi] That’s so cool. Oh my gosh. Okay, so what kind of what kind of software engine are you using?

[Konner] Yeah, so everything is fully done in-house and for this it’s the Unity game engine.

[Maddi] Look at the detail in this. That looks awesome.

[Konner] We are connected.

[Text on Screen] College of Arts and Sciences Chemistry and Biochemistry

[Maddi] That looks complicated.

[Kylie Johnson, Bachelor of Science in Chemistry] Not too bad.

[Maddi] What are you doing?

[Kylie] Uh, right now I’m measuring out some food waste. So we have potato peels right here that are all dried out. Um and we’re gonna try to figure out what the energy content of it is.

[Maddi] How does that apply to us?

[Kylie] Hopefully we can extract some valuable compounds that can go into cosmetics or pharmaceuticals or fertilizers and things that you use on a day-to-day basis. Um and have it come from waste instead of creating and generating more waste.

[Maddi] How can I help?

[Kylie] Oh yeah, if you want to help me measure this out, we got gloves right over there.

[Maddi] Yeah. Okay, awesome.

[Kylie] We are solving problems.

[Text on Screen] College of Arts and Sciences History

[Anders Zunich, Bachelor of Arts in History] Can I help you?

[Maddi] No. No.

[Anders] Are you sure I can’t help you?

[Maddi] Yeah, no. I was just curious what you were doing.

[Anders] I’m a history major. I’m working on some primary source research here in our archives.

[Maddi] Oh, that’s cool. For a project?

[Anders] Yeah, I’m writing about the 1890 Coeur d’Alene miner strikes and their effect on labor history.

[Maddi] Very interesting. You said you’re a history major?

[Anders] Yes, I am.

[Maddi] What can you do with that?

[Anders] Well, history majors do all kinds of things. You could be a teacher, a lawyer, an archivist at a corporation, you could even be a film researcher.

[Maddi] Oh, that’s super cool.

[Anders] Absolutely. Very cool.

[Maddi] Continue.

[Anders] We are telling the story of humanity.

[Text on screen] College of Arts and Science Geosciences

[Maddi] Hey, can I ask you what you’re doing?

[Sydney Hale, Bachelor of Science in Geosciences] Yeah, I’m a geoscience major. I’m looking at these rocks to determine the origin and composition.

[Maddi] Oh, that’s so cool. What for?

[Sydney] They can tell us a lot about Boise. Like this whole area used to be underwater because of Lake Idaho. So I’m looking at the river deposits to see how the Boise River changed it.

[Maddi] That’s crazy. How does that apply to today?

[Sydney] They can tell us a lot about future changes, like erosion, natural resources, and even climate change. It’s like reading Earth’s diary.

[Maddi] Oh my gosh. Can I see?

[Sydney] Yeah. We are discovering the world around us.

[Text on Screen] College of Arts and Sciences Music

[Maddi] Hey. Hey, can I ask what you’re doing?

[Minnie Aagard, Bachelor of Arts in Music] Yeah, I’m just practicing some solo repertoire right now.

[Maddi] Oh, very cool. What for?

[Minnie] I just won a competition with Boise State. They put on this concerto aria like competition every year in the music department. And I just won it, so I’m preparing right now for a concert with them and I’m gonna be a featured soloist with the orchestra.

[Maddi] Congratulations!

[Minnie] Thank you.

[Maddi] Yes, that’s so exciting. What do you plan to do with it in the future?

[Minnie] I love performing right now, uh but the real thing I want to do is go teach students in the future and I’m really hoping to be a band director.

[Maddi] That’s awesome.

[Minnie] Thank you.

[Maddi] Yeah, of course. Well, we can do a little jam session while I’m here. Okay. Five, six, seven, eight. I actually don’t know how to play.

[Minnie] That’s okay. That’s all good. Hey, you’re good.

[Maddi] Well, you keep practicing. Hey, thanks. Thanks so much.

[Minnie] Thanks for Yeah, of course. Yeah. We are expressing ourselves.

[Maddi] Here at Boise State, we are looking to the future.

[Kylie] We know where we’re headed.

[Konner] We’re ready for careers.

[Sydney] We’re shaping policy.

[College of Arts and Science Student] We are leading and creating community.

[Maddi] We are the backdrop to your education, the stage for your experience and the lab for your future. [All] We are the College of Arts and Sciences.
