Boise Chamber Music Series: Aeolus String Quartet

Friday, Sep. 27 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm MDT

$35

Friday, September 27, 2024
7:30 pm
Morrison Center Recital Hall, C200

With performances acclaimed for both “high-octane” excitement (Strad) and “dusky lyricism” (New York Times), the Aeolus Quartet has been awarded prizes at nearly every major competition in the United States and performed across the globe. Mark Satola of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes, “The quartet has a rich and warm tone combined with precise ensemble playing . . . and an impressive musical intelligence guided every technical and dramatic turn.”

The Aeolus Quartet has performed in venues ranging from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Lincoln Center’s Great Performers Series to Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall to Dupont Underground, a subterranean streetcar station in DC’s Dupont Circle. Formed in 2008, they were the 2013-2015 Graduate Resident String Quartet at the Juilliard School and are currently Quartet-in-Residence at Musica Viva NY.

Our Boise concert reflects their commitment to programming cutting-edge contemporary music alongside great masterworks, and in fact, Paul Wiancko’s 2016 LIFT may be reckoned as both. NPR music producer Tom Huizenga said, “If Haydn were alive to write a string quartet today, it may sound something like Paul Wiancko’s LIFT.” The NY Times called it a work that “teems with understanding of and affection for the string-quartet tradition.” The concert begins with a Bach chorale, in accordance with Aeolus Quartet’s “Bach for All” pandemic project, followed by Spanish cellist-composer Andrea Casarrubios’ warm, contemporary tribute to Bach. Antonín Dvořák’s monumental final quartet in in G, Op. 106, closes the concert.
