Boise Chamber Music Series: "A Little Afternoon Music" with Aeolus String Quartet

Friday, Sep. 27 @ 3:30 pm - 4:20 pm MDT

Friday, September 27, 2024
3:30 – 4:20 pm
Morrison Center Recital Hall, C200

The Aeolus String Quartet will engage the campus and wider community in a free mini-performance of excerpts and discussion about Paul Wiancko’s 2016 LIFT, a tour de force of diverse 21st-century musical ideas.

NPR music producer Tom Huizenga said, “If Haydn were alive to write a string quartet today, it may sound something like Paul Wiancko’s LIFT.” The NY Times called it a work that “teems with understanding of and affection for the string-quartet tradition.”  In the composer’s own words: “LIFT is an investigation of elation in its musical form. Inspired by the Aizuri Quartet’s gift for group expressiveness and virtuosity, I joyously explored the capacity for harmony, color, and rhythm itself to evoke and inspire. Though I drew heavily from my experience as a chamber musician to articulate its many interlocking parts, the piece ultimately represents the journey of a soul – laid out in fervent, celebratory detail.”

With performances acclaimed for both “high-octane” excitement (Strad) and “dusky lyricism” (New York Times), the Aeolus Quartet has been awarded prizes at nearly every major competition in the United States and performed across the globe. Mark Satola of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes, “The quartet has a rich and warm tone combined with precise ensemble playing . . . and an impressive musical intelligence guided every technical and dramatic turn.”

Formed in 2008, the Aeolus Quartet has performed in venues ranging from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Lincoln Center’s Great Performers Series to Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, to Dupont Underground, a subterranean streetcar station in DC’s Dupont Circle.
