Students create AI-generated holiday video cards

Students enrolled in MEDIAPRO 480 – Special Topics AI in Media Production examine various artificial intelligence tools to produce videos, using the tools to generate scripts, images, motion, voice and soundtracks. 

Instructor Nathan Snyder challenged students to create a fully AI-generated holiday video card in a single class period using two previously unexplored AI tools of their choice.

Student Brinklie Casale accepted the challenge.

Brinklie created “Welcome to Pumpkinville” using Ideogram for the initial image, minimax (Hailou AI) for the motion and Chat GPT for the Halloween poem. Select phrases from the poem were transferred to Suno AI for music generation. A variety of techniques covered in the course were applied during the creation of the video:

  • Creating image generation prompts using descriptive visualization and motion generation prompts using descriptive verbs.
  • Prompting in the positive/creative rather than negative prompting. 
  • Analyzing each generation and then reiterating to drive better subsequent generations. 
  • Using alternate references when possible.

Students document their creative process using generative AI by keeping track of the prompts that work well and pairing them with the corresponding generation for future reference.

MEDIAPRO 480 students are encouraged to explore a variety of tools in the course. For faculty or staff wishing to use AI tools or require their students to use them, consider one of the supported AI Tools or complete the Software and Accessibility Review Board process.

MEDIAPRO 480: Artificial Intelligence in Media Production

Artificial intelligence, commonly known as A.I., has rapidly emerged as a ubiquitous term in various industries, poised to profoundly impact many sectors. Among these, media production stands out as an arena set to undergo rapid transformation as A.I. continues its exponential development. But what is artificial intelligence? How is it currently utilized in media production, and what potential does it hold for the future? Furthermore, what are the limits of A.I.’s capabilities in this field, and how does its use impact the media industry? Lastly, how can media professionals harness A.I. to enhance media quality while upholding authenticity and social responsibility?

Although not a computer science course, this media production course aims to demystify A.I. by exploring topics such as neural networks, generative A. I.  and machine learning. It provides a high-level overview of the evolution of computing machine technologies and their applications in media production, spanning from optical character recognition to spell check to chatbots and beyond. The course emphasizes three primary areas: print, audio, and photo/video, with a focus on practical application through projects and assessments.
