Chris McCaslin, a PhD student in the Department of Geosciences under advisors, Dylan Mikesell and HP Marshall accepted a Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) fellowship, a scholarship-for-service program funded by the Department of Defense.
This fellowship combines educational and workforce development opportunities for science, technology, engineering and mathematics students. PhD students comprise only 19% of the 17% of applicants selected. The SMART fellowship program enhances the Department of Defense civilian workforce with innovative scientists, engineers and researchers across the United States. The fellowship also creates a highly skilled science, technology, engineering and mathematics workforce within the Department of Defense that competes with dynamic trends in technology and innovation to protect national security.
McCaslin will work from one of the Department of Defense’s national laboratories during the fellowship. Upon graduation, fellows have the opportunity to continue a career with the Department of Defense.
